The last fights of these 4 fighters. They are criticised to have some of the following flaws: - slow - weight drained - low work rate - bad defense - didn't pursue game plan But they all do look good in the previous fights bar their last fight (maybe bar ODLH who looks really shot). They have beaten and performed competetive battles against elite fighters. Maybe the real reason is the fighter infront of them making them look bad? No? Thoughts...
Yep. With this fight that's certainly the case. Although I think if you understand Clottey's mindset you would know he wasn't going to show desperation. He would be content with packing it in. Maybe that is just Clottey... I still feel he truly wanted to look different than most of Pac's foes. So it's a double bonus for him to play safe and go the distance.
Yeah. Pacquiao made them look bad. HOWEVER, these were carefully selected opponents to some degree, or even large degree, and I don't think Freddie Roach is tactful enough or humble enough to tell you otherwise. The laboratory is where it all begins. And ends.
I think Hatton did fight dumb. Again, he did that leaping left hook which he used to knock out Maussa. It got him hurt and later stopped against Mayweather. He got caught doing that against Lazcano a couple times and was in trouble during that one round. He got caught doing it again against Malignaggi, but luckily for Hatton, Paulie can't punch. He did it again against Pacquiao and got knocked on his face. I don't think Clottey fought dumb. He was just overwhelmed by Manny's attack, and also not the strongest fighter mentally to begin with. DLH didn't fight dumb, he just got his ass kicked.
I think the only one with a legit excuse was Delahoya, who obviously was not the same fighter, im still convinced a prime or even close to prime Oscar would ko Pac. Cotto was only slightly diminished he was still at 90 to 95% a little more wouldnt have made a difference. Hatton would get violently knocked out no matter how many times him and Manny Fought. Clottey is just not active enough to beat Pac although he did do well when he opened up. I stated before this fight that he is not active enough to win this fight. Although i thought he would win at least a few rounds.
Clottey looked as shot as Hoya today. Pac made Hoya looked shot. Just like what Steward said: "He just didn't know what to do!". Clottey looked exactly like Hoya tonight.
No way Clottey at least had some speed in his punches when he did let loose. DLH had nothing left come fight time.
Clottey didn't look shot at all. Just mentally weak and overwhelmed by Pacquiao's activity. DLH looked as shot as Tony Montana. I remember by the 2nd round being surprised by how god-awful DLH looked, and not only because of how great Pacquiao looked. His punches and reactions just looked slow as hell.
Clottey wasn't shot, it's just that when you have someone like Pacquaio opposite you in the ring, you have to be really good (prime JMM) to keep up with him. A slow fighter like Clottey was never going to be able to keep up with the pace, and didn't seem to have other strategies to resort to.
I dont get all these comments about Clottey being slow, If anything i was impressed with his speed when he did let go, he was just inactive. Watched the fight with my Dad and we both mentioned how fast Clotteys hands were when he did throw.
these were the 4 best welte and jnr welters out there when pac fought them, hindsight is 20/20. pac had more to do with them fighting poorly than they did in pac fighting well.
I agree and disagree. Agree you have a case on Clottey that he's carefully selected, but don't agree on the others as risk-free fights. i'll try to break down my opinion: 1) ODLH - i remember Roger Mayweather interview saying, Oscar thought no matter what weight they'll fight he thought he's gonna simply bully the midget. Pac only got one fight outside 130 at this point, against a B level fighter David Diaz. 2) Hatton - Hatton indeed after the Pac fight got perceived as non-elite, hell he got KO'd in 2 rounds. But if we go back during fight negotiation, i believe it's a risk for Pac. Hatton was getting back on his feet before the fight. He did a good showing against who we thought as an elite fighter Palie Malignaggi and i rate Hatton's win against Collazo (who to me beat Berto) a better win than Kotsa. 3) Cotto - need i say more on how quality this fighter was touted as before the fight? Pac only got one fight in WW going into this battle. Cotto outboxed Mosley (close fight) and though Margarito softened him, he showed he has bounced back by winning the late rounds against Clottey that got him a deserved SD. Cotto is alteast ranked #3 in WW, midget Pac fighting any legit top 10 WW at the time is quite a risk. 4) Clottey - At this point, hands down Pac has fooled some people. He turns out to be the real deal and has to be considered a legit WW. Fans deserve to see a fight against the best WW, and that's not Clottey. Why i agree on your case. But to give the benefit of the doubt, at the time when FMJ negotiation fallout, Clottey is the only established WW available. But being in Arum's stable didn't help that case. Plus Clottey isn't a push over, some minority thought his fight against Margarito is a draw. He's schooling Baldomir before the disqualification and Cotto fight is so close some thought it's a robbery. Just saying he was a live threat before the fight.
Putting it all back on paper isn't the direction to go. Mosley at this stage is far from unbeatable, and Roach wanted no part of him. Splain that, Lucy. There was no overt, ridiculous out or angle to play on with Mosley. Freddie Roach didn't even want to gamble.
Don't know about the others, but when I call him a slow fighter I don't mean his handspeed, but his activity in general. Maybe inactive would be a better word.
