21/03/2009 WBA SUPER BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE (The O2, Dublin, Ireland) THE COMBATANTS: This content is protected BERNARD DUNNE (STATS) Age - 29 Residence - Dublin, Ireland. Height - 5'7 Stance - Orthodox Record - 27-1 (14 KO's) RICARDO CORDOBA (STATS) Age - 24 Residence - San Miguelito, Panama Height - 5'8 Stance - Southpaw Record - 34-1-2 (21 KO's) This looks like a really hard fight for Bernard. I've been watching a few of Cordoba's fights since this match-up was announced and he honestly looks a level up from Dunne. He has very good ring movement, bangs terrific to the body and has a long, wicked southpaw left. I don't know what the exact reach comparison is, but Cordoba does appear to have a big advantage in this area; a real long-armed banger. Dunne will have to bring his A-game for this one, but he's a smart tactician and it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that he could pull out a points decision by peppering the Panamanian with punches and generally trying to stay out of his way and win the fight on the move - not easy to do with the reach Cordoba has (Dunne won't KO Cordoba). NB: Cordoba has only fought outside of Panama three times, and these trips account for the two draws and one loss on his record. Home turf could be a big advantage for Dunne, and you can be sure it will be a raucous atmosphere at the arena for this one. How do you see it going?
Its gonna be a toughie alright; this Cordoba fella beat Caballero with relative ease (117-111, 117-111, 117-112), and had his fellow Panamanian down in the 10th round. It'll have to be a perfect performance from Bernard to steal this one.
Heres the link if any of you guys want to watch the card www.rte.ie/live It starts off at 9pm and is free world wide
Cordoba is not a big puncher if you study his record in detail. You will actually find of all the decentish B levels he's fought he has not knocked them out. His KO ratio is actually very flattering and is mostly built on cans back in Panama. Even his last couple of fights against C+ fighters have gone to the cards. That said he's a big kid, southpaw, pretty slick and I really don't see Dunne being able to outbox him, and Dunne can't punch, so his options seem limited in there. However I expect a good boxing match, a chess match, I don't see Dunne getting bowled over easily this time. Cordoba UD, possibly late TKO if Dunne's stamina lets him down and he starts putting his questionable whiskers in the way.
nah man, my mate who i go watching all the fights with got put away for a while could of gone with some other lads but decided against as i had doubts on dunnes chances now im regretting big time
I would have like to have gone myself, but I spent shitloads over at the Khan-Barrera fight last week..........so I'll just have to watch it on TV. **** days.
Didn't Cordoba kill a fighter? Post-fight with Cordoba one of his opponents died I think??? I think Cordoba will win by stoppage around the 8th/9th round.
Dunne's chin, stamina and punching power stood up to scrutiny tonight, the 3 elements people doubted he had. I had a gut feeling that he was going to stop Cordoba but didn't want to say it or bet on it in case I jinxed him! Just rewatching, Dunne was an animal in round 4, he could have stopped it there. Can't believe so many people doubted him, I wonder who here that was dissing him have seen anything but the Kiko fight.
