Napoles was a faded Welterweight at this time, whereas Duran was a primed Lightweight. Their careers didn't quite coincide well enough for a fight to have ever came off.

Yes but he was still WBC champ, faded or not. This fight could of come off, history is full of great champs taking on young contenders.
I go for Duran by the way, how would of coped with Cuevas, Palomino. Espadas, Stracey, Muniz etc at that time.

Duran still had a few more years of fighting at Lightweight, though. Welterweight wasn't really on his radar at the time. A hypothetical matchup between the two at relative points in their career would make more sense. The Napoles from the mid 60's against the Duran of the mid 70's at Lightweight, for example. That would be one for the ages.

Yes I agree with you but if Duran had moved up earlier how would he have gone?
These two were both champs in 75.

Duran and Napoles are about 11 years in age apart.... Joe Naps being older.......... Duran was 24 in 1975 and would've took the near 35 year old Naps' head right off in about 7 rds at 140 pounds....... No problem........

At this point I would say Duran. Napoles was at the end of the line.

The added weight & huge experience difference should at least allow. Napoles to last the distance. unless a nasty cut doesnt stop the fight earlier.

In 1975 Duran was coming into his prime years, while a faded Napoles lost his title to John H Stracey. Duran would thrash Napoles at this point. It would be better to do a thread featuring a 1970 version of Napoles v Duran of 1975. Now,that would be a contest, with Duran winning a close one on the cards.

By 1970 Jose was probably already coming to the end of his prime, considering he looked as good as he ever did in '64 bombing out Urbina, although his night out against Pete Toro was one of his best.

Duran would decision him ... a few years earlier and it was a fight Duran's management wanted no part of ..

I'd take Duran at this time. But like El Buja said, if they were to be matched at similar points of their careers, i give Napoles a great chance, and it's on a stylistic basis.

Prime for prime (you name the weight) Napoles would have beaten Duran. Way too slick..he was De Jesus squared. Napoles W15 Duran in a sharpshooter's masterpiece.
