There was 5 months between the 1st and 2nd fight. No way a fighter puts on 80lbs and loses it again in that timeframe.

MAYBE Duran was guzzling a (British) Gallon of LARD everyday for 3months,,,,,,,,,,,, THEN went And caught AIDS to lose it all in teh remaining 2months?? I dunno m8, im pulling this **** outta my ass, to try to make gaining And losing 80LBS in only 5months as "believable" as possible.:D

In conclusion, Duran had AIDS when he Rematched Leonard in fight no.2, And therefore Sugar's win is 100% NULL AND VOID!!:-(

Duran beat Leonard at his best. Leonard beat Duran at his worst. Duran>Leonard. Period, case closed, end of discussion/we blowin' up like spontaneous human combustion.

Leonard might have beaten Duran {in New Orleans} even if Duran had come in tip top shape. He had learned from his loss and was still improving as a young fighter. Duran gave him an infighting education in Montreal.

The reason he quit the way he did when Leonard never hurt him was because he was weightdrained. The Leonard made him quit arguement is amusing. Its the easy journalistic hook.

Leonard deserves full credit for the win but Duran was a jackass between fights. A simple fact.

    Love Roberto Duran,,,,

But no way did he gain that massive weight.

I would believe he got up to 170 lbs. tops. Maybe a 20 lb. weight gain.

He was in no way that undisciplined (without proper control).

I saw him in New York City, a few months before the SRL-Rematch, and he was
in relatively good shape. Not sure on his weight, but he looked to be around 160 lbs.

As for his stomach issue. Back in January 1974, Roberto fought one
Leonard Tavarez in Paris, France. Duran was around 145 lbs. for that
fight, and he had been hitting the 'buffet table' pretty good a few days before that fight.

His stomach looked somewhat swollen before that bout. In Round 2,
Tavarez whacked Roberto pretty good with a couple of body shots.

If you look close, you could see Roberto wince in pain. and almost
double-over. He was really bothered by the body punch, as the
over-eating problem before the fight caught up to him.

Same thing happened in his fight with Guts Ishimatsu, when
the Japanese Terror smacked Roberto with a right hand to the belly.

    The 'full stomach caper'.

Duran is probably the most complete fighter I've ever seen on film. He doesn't need the excuses.

This might seem like a strangs notion to many but I think Duran knew that he wouldn't beat Leonard in the 2nd fight even before they both stepped into the ring. Duran was magnificent in Montreal but the fight was still somewhat close. Leonard won the last 3 rounds if I remember correctly and hit Duran with some very hard punches. Ray fought a pretty dumb fight but Duran had a lot to do with it no question. I wonder however if Duran had to question himself as to whether or not he could summon the fire and desire to do it all over again. He fought the fight of his life but the kid was there until the end and came on strong...and he was still maturing as a fighter. I don't think Duran let himself go with only a few months between fights because he took Ray lightly and figured he didn't have to train that hard...especially after that 1st fight. I think there was a deeper psychological dynamic going on. I think Roberto said "No mas" to himself sometime before the 2nd fight even took place. It's not cowardice...not at all. I just think that deep down Duran knew that he could never replicate the form he had in Montreal...and that Leonard was going to win in New Orleans.

Exactly. Duran was clearly a blown up featherweight. So his lightweight losses don't count.
