A I watched 30 for 30 no mas, during the program Leonard commented about his encounter with Duran feeling so grueling. Leonard mentioned everyone of Duran's punches hurting and feeling as if his hands were made of stone. Then Panama Lewis is shown making some type of observation as to Duran's mindset.......... Panama Lewis was in Duran's corner that night in Montreal....... ........it dawned on me, could Duran's handwraps have been loaded vs Leonard??? Considering that just a couple of years later, Panama Lewis was giving Aaron Pryor a stimulant in his water bottle to open Pryor's breathing tubes, and months after that he was doing the same to Luis Resto and according to Resto himself Panama loaded his gloves for his fight with Billy Collins......... ........I could'nt help but just ponder. Anybody know for how long Duran worked with Panama Lewis?
Yeah, that caught my eye too. We'll never know, though. That said, everyone agrees that Duran was one heck of a puncher, both before and after his association with Lewis. Plus he was quick, relentless, worked the body and head, and was deceptively hard to hit despite all of the pressure he applied, for he had really good head movement that worked well in conjunction with feints, quick step-ins, and rapid-fire up and down combinations.
Sure, all that.......what got me though is the sincerity in which Duran stated Duran's punches felt. The look and demeanor in his face was'nt of a man that was exxaggerting. I'm thinking that if Duran's hands felt like Leonard described, I was thinking that Duran was not a murderous puncher and yet Leonard is feeling his punches like its stones hitting him. Here is a lightweight, a fighter who did'nt carry his power with him to welter and above and yet Leonard is feeling his punches like he's never felt anyone's before........... Check this out...... June 16, 1983, Roberto Duran as an underdog bloodgeons and destroys Davey Moore at Madison square Garden. Thats the last time that Duran looked like Roberto Duran, the hands of Stone....... I ****ing just did some research on on the very night on the Duran-Moore undercard, a huge underdog Luis Resto pummels Billy Collins rearranging his face. In the ring, Billy Collins father goes over to Resto and discovers there's padding missing from Resto's gloves. Panama Lewis was in Resto's corner. Panama was convicted and sent to jail for assault. He was banned from boxing for life. Resto years later in a documentary "assault in the ring" confesses that aside from Panama taking padding away from his gloves, he loaded his handwraps with plaster and gave him from a water bottle inbetween some rounds to open up his breathing tubes. You think thats coincidence????? After this night Panama Lewis was sent to prison and banned for life. I'm assuming Panama Lewis was in Duran's corner that night, the very last night Duran performed like the old "savage" Roberto Duran "The hands of stone!"
Duran earned the nickname "Hands of Stone" long before that fight with Leonard. Its possible a guy like Lewis would do something like that but with Ray Arcel and Freddie Brown in Duran`s corner I dont think it happened. I can`t say for sure that Panama even wrapped Duran`s hands at all. Duran was a fighter that always had power and he did carry it up to Middleweight not just Welterweight.
Ever since Margo I suspect a lot of guys, but I can't believe Angie Dundee would not be checking out Duran's wraps before that fight. Not to mention I don't think Duran would allow it anyway
Wish I had access to the documentary "assault in the ring." Resto mentioned how Panama tampered with the gloves. I'm not sure he went into detail about the plaster. From what I remember however, Panama did his dirty deeds after the commisioner signed off on the handwraps. I wonder if Panama Lewis had connections with the commision members in Madison square Garden that he could get away with taking the padding off the gloves. We know he gave Aaron Pryor an illegal mix in his water bottle that helped him in his fight with Alexis Arguello. I'm thinking what was there to stop Panama from doing his dirty deeds with Roberto Duran if he thought he could get away with it? If he did it with Resto on the night Duran beat Moorer, why not in a fight that carried true significance, the Duran-Moorer fight??? I'm just saying there's cause for suspicioun and I'm leary with anyone that would associate themselves with Panama Lewis who according to Lewis had a bullly alpha type of personality. Resto was afraid of him for Gods sake. I'm curious as to how good a boxing mind Panama Lewis had, he sure does'nt sound like he's savy from his interviews. Anyone here have info on Panama Lewis capablities as a trainer???
leonard didn't get broken face bones or stopped. Duran's said he used diuretics(for other fights), but this is not quite the same as loaded gloves. Anyone who worked with lewis should be looked at with a bit of suspicion but i don't think montreal is a particularly suspicious fight.
I would'nt have suspected Montreal either, but when Leonard voiced that every shot Duran was landing was hurting him, and Panama is on the 30 for 30 making comments, a red flag immediately went up. I would suspect Duran's fight with Moorer even more as thats the night that Panama took the paddings off of Resto's gloves and loaded his handwraps.
Lewis was a very good trainer skilled in the dark arts of boxing. He might have had a " different " way of wrapping hands. Its a skill. Some trainers can make the tape thick and hard, making the blows hurt more. Lewis could do this. Not saying he cheated for Duran, but he certainly could stretch the rules.
The way he beat Davey Moore with Panama in his corner sorta raised my suspicion. But Duran was a real beast.
I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure Lewis was no longer working with Duran by the time of the Davey Moore fight. Not like Duran needed the aid of dirty wraps to deal with the threat of Moore, either - he had his left thumb for that.
Wiz Duran's , Lewis' end de sport's & yuman reic histories , I hev 2 asyum det Lewis & Duran did chit 2gezer .
