this is just an excuse. More of the same about Duran always. He lost the fight. Why is he given the luxury of an exaggerated story.

What was inaccurate about my description of Duran’s weight troubles and test scare leading into the first fight? Duran was seen working out in thermals and multiple clothing layers the week of the fight, just like he also would have been seen if he’d been doing the same for the rematch, and he was overweight the day before the fight (iirc). This was covered in newspapers at the time--I guess Brown, Arcel and the reporters hadn’t yet launched their false propaganda/disinformation operation...

But whereas we have contemporaneous evidence of his difficulties heading into the fight, all we have are after-the-fact excuses and conjectures regarding his camp for the second fight. Not sure if the steak and tea upset his stomach or if Leonard bruised his ego or what, but as far as as I can tell, Duran was most likely in great shape and well-prepared heading into the fight.

Duran made up good excuses and a few always. For Leonard 2 and for Hearns when he was knocked out. With Hearns, he lost from the get go. That had nothing to do with being in shape, and why wouldn't he be in shape for a guy like Hearns who was the best fighter at 154 in 1984 and elite for awhile at this point.

I'm all about rating fighters on their professionalism.

Since we agree on this can we discard the excuses made for Johnson's performances against O'Brien, Johnson and Willard?

It is hard to compare one era to another. So because one thing happened, Duran should get a pass. Is that what you are saying? And he lost to Ray 2 times. Duran lost to all the elites he fought.
Why discard excuses? If they lost they lost regardless of anything. It sets a bad precedence to accept excuses. I don't want to hear someone threw a fight for any reason. If I pay for a fight or I am under the impression it is legit, whether it comes out later the fight was not legit is not my problem, whether by one reason or another. Bad scoring or the fight not turning out good. etc.

You stated: “Duran had a very hard time making weight for the first fight.”

He didn’t. But, I’d already explained this.

Duran was making 135 a couple of years earlier (at age 26) so if he had trouble making 147 for either of the Leonard fights, who gives a f--k ?
A year or two later he was weighing in over 147 and losing to Kirkland Laing.
So, for an alleged "natural lightweight" he gets a ton of leeway for making weight at higher weights!
    Haha

exactly, this is why the excuses are so ridiculous. One moment he is this small lightweight moving up (even thought I told people he fought at 154 before Hearns,Benitez and Leonard fought there) and then another moment he has trouble making weight and being in shape. The excuses go everywhere to he didn't train to he ate a steak and 2 gallons of water. He lost the fight in Nov. 1980. Simple as that. Ray outboxed him easily.

I'm convinced that @PernellSweetPea and @mrkoolkevin would rather post hate on Duran while building up fantasy on there man Leonard regardless of what the truth actually is. I've never seen such biased self serving twisting of facts while trying to substantiate rumors that favor there line of thanking as fact. Its absolutely pathetic as I started reading these from page 1 and had to stop at page 6 as it got so out of hand and ridiculous it was embarrassing. It's like Duran did something to these 2 while being on Leonard's payroll. The only thing I can compare it too is Byrds scorecard in the first Canelo G fight. Fanboys behavior at it's most ridiculous

Dundee did some research on Duran and knew that Duran was hanging out at Victors cafe in NY where a lot of drug dealers hang out etc. Duran drank soda pop and eat like an animal between fights and Dundee insisted on a November fight knowing Duran could not be in condition. Dundee said ok we will fight Hearns and Duran and his people did not want to lose the leonard money $$$$ Duran was in poor condition and for Leonard that was not enough. SRL had the knowledge going in....good Dundee strategy

I don't think it is unfair to say excuses diminish Ray's win. Ray won fair and square. The fact that someone come in out of shape and that being an excuse is ridiculous. It should be a given they are in shape.
