People who think Roberto Duran is overrated are not true boxing fans.

no way in hell is duran overated, he still catxches flack for the 2nd sugar ray leonard bout, idiots can't let it go and don't realize that the reason he quit against sugar ray leonard was because leonard wouldn't fight like a man and stop running....still a very dumb thing to do but in durans mind he was thinking this guy won't even fight he just wants to run, **** this.

As I said in the `Duran, overrated or what ?` thread.....

If you rank Duran no1 of all time, you overrate him.
If you rank Duran outside of your top 10 of all time, you underrate him.

    It really is THAT simple.

I've been watching the sport since 1965.

in that time I rank him #2.

Others whose span goes back much further rank him 5-8 alltime.

I think that's probably about right.

I didn't even read the other thread. Anyone saying he's overrated is more than likely judging him on a couple of fights way out of his prime. His lightweight work alone is phenomenal. After The leonard fight everything is icing on the cake. For him to come back and beat Barkley after everything he'd been through was amazing.

    Good guess.

Ali (and other heavyweights) are often at a disadvantage in so-called lb4lb consideration.

So I consider greatness as a blend of lb4lb (in its original sense), abilities, and accomplishment.

So I have Ali at 1 and Duran at 2.

I have seen enough of SRR on tape and know enough about him, despite him being before my time, to agree that He probably merits being ahead of Duran and probably Ali too.

Mostly from the words of others and from grainy film and from the record, I would allow perhaps Willie Pep and Hank Armstrong in there too.

I would not go back before the early thirties at the absolute earliest in making comparisons as the sport was too different and the comparisons too uneven.

    Sam Langford ?

    Definitely too far back.

    Would we include John L?

    John Jackson ?

That anyone would consider Duran outside the top 10 (or 20 at worst), speaks volumes for their understanding and grasp of the sport.

I dont think Duran is overrated either, but that "fight like a man.." quote is idiotic at best. In fact, that may rank as one of the most abusurd quotes ever offered on ESB in the 2+ years I've viewed this forum.
