Duran is a quitter. Why do people like him so much?

First of all, the fight where Duran quit claiming no mas was the second fight. It was not a rubber match, though they did fight one many years later.

Duran had already soundly beaten Sugar Ray Leonard in their first fight. Duran took Sugar Ray Leonard's 0 away taking away his undefeated fighter status. This was a huge loss for SRL to put it mildly. SRL afterwards said he did his best.

In the second fight, Duran claimed he had stomach cramps as a reason for his "no mas" but looked more frustrated than anything else. That was a stupid decision by Duran. I don't think people overlook it or don't judge it harshly at all. Many people thought he was an idiot and I bet he sure regrets it.

The third fight, which SRL won, was boring and booed. Some say that SRL was lucky that fights were reduced to 12 rounds from 15 because Duran had put a very bad cut on SRL's eye near the end and might have won it.

I agree with others that it ranks as one of the most infamous events in boxing but overall and on balance, they don't call Duran hands of stone and he is not held in high regard for no good reason. He is one of the greatest who made a real bad decision one night. That's it.

 

After he quit he fought a lot of other greats and top contenders including Benitez, Hagler, Hearns, Barkley.

Many people forget that Duran had a whole career at Lightweight and established himself as one of the best of all time there before he even stepped foot in a ring with Hearns/SRL/Hagler.

The fact that he's a natural lightweight and stepped up and beat Leonard who many now consider to be the greatest natural welterweight of all time in his prime at his home weight and actually competed with these guys speaks volumes of how good the guy was and why people love him.

You cant judge his whole career (100+ fights) on one sour point.

 

Same reason why people don't hate on Morales for quitting on Pac.

They both did wonders before and even after their own moment of weakness.

I think every logical boxing fan proved the thread starter wrong and exposed him as an idiot.

 

Look I'm a Judah fan but he hasn't accomplished even 1/3 of what Duran has accomplished. Remember that Roberto dominated a competitive division for almost a decade...defeated the best p4p boxer of the 80's in his prime...won a Middleweight Title at 40 years old. I think he deserves a pass for 'No Mas'.

You try Boxing Suger Ray Leonard when you need to take a ****. It's not easy!

 

Duran is a man. SRL is a ****. Duran came to fight. SRL came to run. Duran got pissed & thats the end of story.

 

I was at pay per view showing, spent a lot of money to see it, and bet Duran too. AS boxing fan I was happy as all hell, when fight grew strange, him jus following Leonard, I thought he was going to put on frantic ending. When he quit, everyone was pissed, shocked, totally disgusted.

Something needing mention: His trainers both disowned him after, Arcel and Freddy Brown. Also, media coverage was big, it was scandal. Te talk was that his 8 million dollar payday should be withheld. Few days passed, then it was discovered his 8 million had been paid to him before fight, and was safe in his Panamanian bank account. He hurt sport for f ew years ****ed over many fans, it is something to forgive to a point, but not something to brush under rug.

 

His career as a "whole" clearly outshines his one moment of "No Mas." C'mon TS really? The guy is a top 15 ATG IMO.
