Folks, You all know by now that I am a 'Duran' jocksniffer to the max....... It's true.... YES!! I have no shame, either...... NONE!! :nut BUT! In all reality, let's get down to business here............. "Duran-Moore" of '83 is my ALL-TIME favorite fight......... YES! I am sick......... I was foaming at the mouth when Duran was killing Moore in New York at MSG!! Okay, we ALL know that Duran won the fight big time......... But that's not the point / issue here...... My SERIOUS question is: "How Good Was Duran's Power At 154 Pounds?" I am asking cuz, if you all recall in the fight with Davey Moore, Duran did indeed knockdown Moore in round 7 with a wicked right hand....... BUT! Duran was not able to finish off Moore cuz time ran out...... YET!!! Come round 8, Duran was once again on the attack eating Moore alive with shot after shot, but was unable to drop Moore for a second time prior to official 'Jay Edson' climbing into the goddamn ring to see what the hell referee Ernesto Magana was thinking, and in doing so, stopping the masscare........ Duran wins WBA title..... NOW!!!!!! Am I full of **** or not? I love Duran......... Done deal there....... But, if he (Duran) was a wicked puncher at 154 pounds in 1983, why the hell did Moore remain on his feet for "2" minutes into round 8 without going down??? Any thoughts or debate????? :huh:shock::bbb:rasta MR.BILL
Duran was a fantastic fighter, but he wasn't powerful at 154. Duran was a bull at lightweight, and looked very strong against Leonard and Palomino at 147; but his punch did not land with the same impact as it did two divisions lighter. Duran's physical strength was exceptional for his size, and must be noted; but it was his skill set that allowed him to succeed above 147.
Duran punched like a mule, he knocked down future lightheavyweight champion iran barkley, that should tel you something about his power, a guy who made his pro debut at featherweight and spent his prime at lightweight knocking down a huge middleweight, who then went on to become lightheavy champion. Duran was a freak of nature:good
Wasn't Duran 156 against Barkely, whom he stunned badly 3-4 times and floored heavily late in their fight? Thats just a few pounds north of 154, I'd say he was a very capable puncher at 154.
Early in the fight it was about even, they were both getting good shots in, thou Durans defence was a little better. Duran seemed to be able to hurt Moore, were Moore did not look like he was hurting Duran. I would say that Duran had good power, but not one shot ko power, it looked like his shots were a bit crisper. He basicly wore Moore down but could not ko him. Does any one know how Moore's chin was in his other fights?
Duran was a good puncher at 154 and decent at 160. I was amazed at his power on USA network when he would fight some of the tomato cans he fought at that time, but regardless of that he would put guys down easily. He was a puncher.
FELLAS! The feedback is fine with me....... I live for this....................... Duran is my man....... BUT!!!!! Why the hell did he fail to drop Moore in round 8 for the FULL count, instead of having "Official" Jay Edson climbing into the goddamn ring motioning to Magana???????? What happened there???? MR.BILL
I think Duran had "Respectable" power at 154, but not wicked power like a "Hearns or Jules Jackson." Duran could hurt / stun a mother at 154, but not truly park his ass like a Chevy Truck............ Cheers........ MR.BILL
Sometimes you just have to give credit to a fighter's will and heart. I think Duran could bang in practically every division he ever campaigned in, because his timing and technique was so extraordinarily good. Michael Spinks, for example, was considered a one-punch hitter at Light Heavyweight. He destroyed Johnson, had Eddie on his ass, and stopped a very durable Yaqui Lopez. He comes across a journeyman named Willie Taylor, and puts the hurt on this guy. Seriously, flush right hands, left uppercuts are bouncing off this guy's chin round after round and you can visibly see Spinks in shock. Well, Willie was stopped 6 times in his career. It doesn't make sense when you consider how good and how hard Spinks hit, but some nights you just run into guys like that. Moore was never actually knocked spark out from my recollection, he seemed to be pretty durable despite him being buzzed quite a few times. In any event, Duran beat the living **** out of this guy, and the referee failed to do his job and shouldn't have been paid.
He had heavy hands at 154 and 160 but not big one-punch-ko-power. But that combined with his skills, defence and intensity is enough.
Duran could still punch at 154, but the thumb in Davey's eye and its subsequent closure helped Duran win it one-sidedly. I feel Duran would've otherwise won it in a manner similar to the Barkley fight.
Davey Moore was tough. He usually took a lot of punishment in his fights before winning. Duran wasn't a one punch guy above 135 pounds.
Tony Ayala was lucky duran didnt get his hands on him round that time, he would of got a beatdown just like moore only probaly worse!
