The Duran fight was soon after Wilfred k.o.ed Maurice Hope for the Jr. MW title.

I've said this before, bet $500 on Benitez that night. Only won about $385 because Wilfred was the fav...duh. IMHO how could anyone not see this coming? I think one judge had it 143-142 Benitez??? What was that guy smoking? Such a great talent that pissed it away with his lifestyle...RIP

    I loved Benitez,,,just loved him...especially his swaggering, theatrical brand of arrogance...and I don't usually go for open arrogance,...but Benitez's brand I loved.

Benitez is still alive as far as I know. Not doing well though.

Yeah, that scorecard was crazy. Benitez won by a pretty wide margin. Duran got some very generous scorecards against Benitez and against Hagler.

Benitez is in an advanced state of neurological decline. I hate even posting this. There's a longer related video, but it is even more heart breaking. If you want to get a gist of the state of his current condition here it is:

My apologies; I thought I'd read he had passed away recently. One of my favorites!

He beat Duran but not anywhere close to prime Duran. The best Duran was at Lightweight. Second best at Welterweight. Above welterweight he was so-so.

I love boxing and it's history but when I see what it did to Ali, Benitez, Patterson, the list is endless. The human head was not meant to take punches as fighters do. If we were all being truthful something really needs to be done.

In the early 70's Jerry Quarry, (and several other fighters), volunteered to have scans done of their heads for a Sports Illustated article. Quarry's brain was already showing signs of the two brain lobes beginning to separate down the center. And we all know how J.Quarry and Mike Quarry ended up.

he fought two legends in one year in 1982. Duran early in 1982 and Hearns late in 1982. Beat Duran easily and lost to Hearns rather close 15 round decision. He was a great fighter who should have stayed at 154... Sort of like Donald Curry should have stayed at 147 for a little longer. These guys don't try to stay down in weight. Wilfred should not have tried 160.... He fought his best at 154.

Donald Curry should have actually moved up sooner than he did
