If you simply WATCH closely you will see that the referee Johnny LoBianco actually caused Roberto Duran to throw infamous AND suspect "low" punch on Ken Buchannan- The bell rang to end the 13th rd...both boxers were in the heat of the battle and didn't hear bell and kept throwing punches, referee then haphazardly grabbed Duran from "behind" (*referee should have stepped "between" boxers to separate them!!!) giving Duran a "semi bear hug" (grabbing both of Duran's arms in an effort to pull Duran away from Buchannan) causing Duran's RIGHT arm which was in mid punch to go low on Buchannan's belt line....END OF STORY!!!!! Epilogue: With Duran not getting full force leverage behind the referee caused errant punch "you" also have to question how much damage was actually done to Buchannan, meaning, was Ken really hurt by punch or just looking for a quick way out of fight? Duran was essentially kicking Buchannan's ass anyway and was ahead on all 3 judges cards at the time too!
It did appear like Buchanan had been shot the way he hit the canvas. I suspect the way it ended prevented Ken from being KO'ed in the next 2 rounds as he was taking a lickin.
Ken wanted to continue but the ref stopped the fight. He was on his feet ready to go for round 14 when LoBianco came in waving his arms to stop it
LoBianco was a dreadful Ref. As for Buchanan quitting ? Forget it. If he was going to swallow it, he wouldn't have waited until this point.
That punch was deliberate Duran had been fouling all fight long Ref Johnny Bianco was made to watch the tape of the late low blow. His response was it was a fair ko punch ROFL You hear the bell to end the round clearly BEFORE Duran threw that low blow. As for Ken not being hurt by that blow. He spent the night in agony in hospital his swollen genitals iced up
