I wonder why it never came off, I've read lots of rumors that some people thought a real fight might break out between these two dinosaurs. Anyone know for sure?
I heard of it, but I am glad it did not come off. Chavez would have the advantage being he is 10 years younger than Duran and at this point it makes a big difference. Somethings would have been interesting.
Duran said, Chavez knows I'm a better fighter than he was , I tried to get a fight with him at 154 when I was 40 something and he refused.
Duran had a bit of a revival in the early 90s. He was fighting around 160 on USA Network. He still had some POP and ringcraft so he could beat journeymen all day. I do recall him offering Chavez a catch-weight fight in a postfight interview. Around 150lbs. Duran would have been dead at that weight. Chavez couldn't hurt anybody @150. Can't lie I would have watched it. Julio's had just started to fade at that time but Duran was the last thing he needed.
Interesting....Duran was the better natural fighter in some ways but with Chavez the devil was in the subtle details...would have been a site to see them in the ring but it would have told us nothing...personally two of my all time favorite fighters to watch and a prime vs prime fight is an all time dream fight of the highest order
