Cuevas was damaged goods by this time. Had they fought in 1979 when it really mattered...Duran would've eeked it on points. Vastly superior defensive abilities make the difference here.

In 1979 they woulda had to fight at lightweight...And Duran woulda destroyed him!

Of course, Cuevas would've been considerably weakened at LW.
However, Duran was fighting at WW in 1979, hence the feasability.

Can't see how Cuevas in 1979 would have been able to last the distance with Duran.

Cuevas' only hope of winning would surely be a KO.

However I suspect Duran would have taken him out before 10 rounds.

Pipino out-punched Roberto in the 'first' 2-Rounds.

He actually lifted Roberto off the canvas with a left hook.

But the simple fact, Roberto had a 'steel rebar reinforced chin'.

And, Pipino just didn't like to get hit.

Pipino couldnt really hurt him..just not enough in his arsenal to go blow for blow with Duran

Son, Pipino could knock out an ape with his power... He had the firepower to hurt anyone he connected clean on.

Cuevas is so damned overrated. Benitez would have beat his ass too.

I don't want to be misunderstood; I said Cuevas was a very dangerous puncher.

Yes, as a puncher, he's more of a KO threat than Duran. He had more power.

As a fighter and overall puncher, meaning more to worry about, Duran is better, and it isn't close.

Cuevas didn't connect cleanly enough and with enough regularity to make a difference against Duran.

Of course Cuevas hit harder than Duran. But Cuevas brought next to nothing else to the table except for good stamina. Duran did literally everything else better than Pipino. Everything! Cuevas could have hit twice as hard- no starch that. Cuevas was as posters have mentioned past his prime and overrated. You could have given him a baseball bat and i'm not sure he beats Duran. Benitez either. Cuevas was a beast but a notch below those guys.
