Here is how I rate Duran and De La Hoya in each department "pound for pound" Power Duran 7.5 De La Hoya 7.5 Speed De La Hoya 8.5 Duran 8.0 Jab De La Hoya 8.5 Duran 7.5 Combination punching De La Hoya 9.0 Duran 8.0 Inside fighting Duran 9.0 De La Hoya 7.5 Defense Duran 8.5 De La Hoya 7.5 Intelligence Duran 8.5 De La Hoya 7.5 Stamina Duran 8.5 De La Hoya 7.0 Chin Duran 9.0 De La Hoya 8.5
Yes but were you influenced in delahoya-mosley by the commentary continually telling you Oscar was winning? More ringsiders had Mosley winning. Its the sort of fight that is abotu preferance - lots of weak arm punches or less more effective power punches Who landed the bigger more effective blows? Mosley Who landed more but less effective blows? Delahoya Your right Vargas wasn't shot, but his punch resiatance surely had gone down majorly. He looked terrible in the 2 fights after Tito and is accepted as shot after Delahoya. It was a good win but was Vargas that amazing in the first place? Overall Delahoya has achieved more at 154 than Duran did, but that doesn't make him better, and Duran achieved more at 160. 147 and 135 are cake walks for Duran. Anyway if we make the fight at 147, best version of each man, no one would give Delahoya a snow balls chance in hell. Duran faded after Leonard 1 but still had enough left to beat Delahoya at 154 on his best night at that weight
Not really sure whom I'd pick, but some points (and questions) I'd like to pose: DLH-Mosley 2 was a close fight that could've gone either way (I had DLH winning by a couple pts). Mosley was on a downstreak at the time and hadn't won a fight in 2 years, but was on the juice. Duran wasn't in the best of shape against Laing, but I'm really not too sure how great of shape Duran was for a number of his fights, mainly in the 80s. Similar to James Toney, I feel he too frequently slacked off in the gym, but it's brought up for their poor performances and not when they were simply too good for their opponents regardless. Was it a just a bad stylistic matchup for Duran against Laing? Laing was a very talented boxer himself with his own problems in terms of work ethic and habits outside the ring.
No, duran really did look terrible and totally out of shape against Laing, who didn't even fight his usual mobile fight. He just used his speed to beat the lethargic Duran to the punch.
The Roberto Duran who battered Davey Moore (R.I.P.) around the ring would defo take Oscar De La Hoya to the limit. This fight would depend on Oscar's decison to either box or slug. IMO, since this is Jr. Middleweight De La Hoya... His game plan would most likley be to box. If Oscar can use his jab consistantly all night he might be able to frustrate Duran and box to a comfortable UD. (Ala Leonard III). If Oscar decides he want's to trade with Duran...big mistake. although not a big puncher at 154, Duran could defo still deliver them punches that will change the way your face is formed. (Duran's Power was the last thing to go) That said, I'll take De La Hoya by UD [In my scenario he decides to Box]
I think it would be a close fight. I think Oscar is a very intelligent fighter and adjusts his style to the circumstances and the man in from of him. He would not stay in front of duran long and would not trade on the inside. I think it would go a lot like DLH's fight vs Tito. I'll take the Duran who destroyed Davey Moore by decision. Any of the other versions of Duran at this weight (vs. Hearns) loses.
The Duran who hammered "Cuevas & Moore" would eat up the DLH who hammered "Castillejon & Vargas" all the way.... DLH beats the Duran who fought "Laing & Benitez." MR.BILL:bbbthumbsup:hat
I think it was the same Duran, it was just the style of Benitez over Cuevas. Cuevas was more made for Duran than Benitez, who is a great boxer. This is what I always say about Duran. He losses and people think it is about him. He did not have the footwork of a guy who would beat anyone. Guys with speed troubled him.
