That pretty much is the story. And somewhere along the way he lost to all the ATG fighters he fought.
How he lost to him 2 times. And Ray made his quit and beat him much more than Duran beat Ray. Ray fought Duran at his own fight and Duran barely won. Ray is the greater fighter. He beat Duran and 3 other ATG fighters. There should be no doubt.
Montreal Duran was near omnipotent. Roberto would is proof that size doesn't matter. Against Tyson, I see Tyson coming out and trying to intimidate Duran by jumping right on him and reigning down blows on his much smaller opponent. After Tyson lands his famed left hook to the body and head, which would have zero effect on Duran, Michael would realise he is in with an irresistable force, and crap his pants. Referee would smell that something is amiss, call foul, and give the fight to Duran by disqualification. Prior to fighting 67 Ali, Duran would tell Ali he's gonna butt**** Elihah Muhamed after he wins, and that Malcolm X's real name was Harvey Schwartz. Enraged, Ali would try to go toe-to-toe with Duran and this would be costly because of Duran's ability to slip punches and fire back. Fighting this way would clearly not be in Ali's best interest and Duran would maul him and rough him up. Ali would make a valient effort to come back, using his nine inch height advantage and 15 inch reach advantage, but it would not be enough. Duran by 15 round UD. Against Lewis, Duran would be the much quicker guy. The only advantage Lewis would have is 10 inches in height, 93 pounds in weight, and 17 inches in reach. Duran would get under his reach and bore in like a tick. It Lewis would be swinging for the fences, but Duran would finish him in 2 after scoring with 75 unanswered blows to the head.
I don't know. I think he was dominant at lightweight in a rather mediocre era and he had power and great skills, but nothing to rank him top fighter ATg. What I argue about is that the only ATG he ever beat was Ray Leonard. And he lost the rematch and rubber match easily and Ray wins the head to head matchup, and still his fans turn facts around to say he was the top 3 fighter ever since Sugar Ray Robinson. I don't see it. I respect all the opinions of you guys and you make good points, but in my mind he comes up short compared to how he really should be rated. It is just a matter of opinions and who believes what. I do not hate Duran since I do not know him personally. It is more how his fans make him sound so dominant and great. My objective reasoning never could accept how high he is ranked. For the ranking he gets he should have been able to move up and beat Benitez and Hearns. For that ranking.
No fighter in any weight division that has ever existed could beat Montreal Duran. For that one night, Duran was unbeatable, he stopped training after that and that's why Leonard was able to land a glove of him in the rematch.
How do you figure? Bruce Lee wasn't even good enough to live as long as Duran's career lasted and longevity is the key factor in H2H. Jeet Kun Do Forum is, not even on this website:deal
