I can't let your post go unchallenged K. You say that Duran was better than Ike in "virtually every area ".Good Lord ! Until Duran's 20th or so bout he fought all South American LW opposition, til he fought Ken Buchanan ,who Duran stopped in the 13th rd with a disputed low blow. After which Duran fought these Lws, Ray Lampkin, Edward Viruet, Saol Mamby, Estaban De Jesus, after which he became a WW. Now K,look what opposition the "inferior" Ike Williams beat as a LW. Just a few ,some of which I saw ringside, and all in their primes. Beau Jack, Gene Burton, Bobcat Bob Montgomery, Sammy Angott, Johnny Bratton, Enrique Bolanos ,great Mexican LW],and the tough, tough Freddie Dawson who Ike kod. Just a handful of LIGHTWEIGHTS that Ike Williams dominated when he was a LW, and was considered just a smidgeon under WW Ray Robinson. He gave WW Kid Gavilan fits in 2 OTW fights even dropping the concrete chinned Gavilan once. To say that you rate Duran over Ike as a LW,is your entitled opinion, but saying Duran beat better lightweights as our thread implies, is ludicrous IMO. I think that Roberto Duran was a great fighter, but Ike Williams PROVED his Light Weight greatness, much, much more, by the great crop of lightweights he beat in a tough, cruel lightweight era...Cheers...
Tell him Burt! There's no comparing Duran's competition at LW to Ike's. Duran was a great fighter but Williams was a notch above and swam in a much deeper LW sea.
Burt Burt Burt.. if you're going to challenge something.. don't you think you need to ACTUALLY CHALLENGE WHAT I SAID? Point me to ANY place where I said Duran faced better LW. I never made such a claim EVER. What I did say.. is he is better than Ike in virtually every area.. which means... physical tools.. better as a fighter. Plus the word.. virtually obviously implies not at all. Lets look shall we... Speed - Duran Defense - Duran Chin - Wash footwork - Duran feights - Duran Power - I would call it a wash but I can give ike this category counterpunching - Duran workrate - Duran ring generalship - Wash or I'm fine giving Ike that.. an argument can be made for both Point is, when you go category by category on abilities.. Duran is superior which is exactly what I was talking about.
Tough, tough battle....Duran was a natural ring genius/werewolf and Williams rugged and deep in experience...this has the makings of a great battle and if Duran is in top condition he manages to win
His quitting shows a lack of mental foratude. Druan was 28 years old and a vetran of 73 fights. Even back than 28 wasn't pushing dasies.
if they foght 3 times Ike could defenitely come out with a win. But i think RD gets by in a closely fought hard paced scrap.
Ike Williams is the one guy who I believe is capable of beating Duran at LW. He had skills, punching power and a mean streak to match. In what is perhaps the best LW title bout ever to transpire, I take Williams by a close points verdict.
