Duran was a class A+ fighter Margo is not he is very similar to Pipino Cuevas another Mexican welter a type straight foward hard puncher which Duran dominated easily.
I'm not sure what happened in the Al Castro fight but boxrec has it listed as a KO loss for Cuevas in the 2nd. Margo also has been hit with some BIG punches. Watch the first Cintron fight and also the Santos rematch. Also this talk of Cuevas being defensively better is hilarious considering Cuevas has been knocked out with his live by the punch, die by the punch mentality. Honestly I think Margo looked much better defensively against Cintron than Cuevas did against Hearns. For what it's worth.
We're talking a near prime Cuevas, not a rookie version. So had Cuevas, but there's a difference between Cintron and Hearns. How much do you think that's worth, honestly?
Think about it. Cuevas backed off from the long powerpunching Hearns who we all know had shakey whiskers. Kinda reminds you of Cintron doesn't it? Margo did the right thing by smothering the long punches of Cintron. Cuevas had already done wrong by backing off Hearns. So already there you have Margo doing better tactically than Cuevas was doing against a similar style opponent. You don't run from punchers like Hearns and Cinton. Secondly, Cuevas didn't keep his elbows tight when he threw. He threw for the fences and left his chin exposed lots of times. Margo does it against guys he feels are below him, but he doesn't do it against guys who he respects. He kept his elbows tight against both Cintron and Clottey and really made Cintron miss and made him pay plenty. Cuevas would be trading punches with Cintron at his distance and he would probably give Cintron a better shot at winning than Margo did.
Sure there is. But don't tell me Cintron can't punch because that is just bull****. Hearns punched hard but he also had the grit and the TECHNIQUE to make it more of a weapon. That in no way diminishes the fact that if Cintron catches you flush he's gonna knock you out. That is, unless you are Tony Margarito.
But it all comes back to a matchup between Margo and Duran, so we're getting off track by trying to argue how he does against Hearns, as those reach and style advantages that apply for Hearns don't apply for Duran. Against Duran, the closer he gets, the worse off he is. And if Margarito is slightly more durable than Cuevas, it doesn't mean he'd last the distance with Duran, as Duran beat and stopped Cuevas in just 4 rounds, so it's quite likely he could do the same to Margarito, just a bit later. That's if Margo truly is more durable or has a style to give him a better shot.
That must be it. Cintron can punch, but nothing like Hearns, and I can almost guarantee you Margo would've been badly rocked with that flush straight right that Hearns landed. Same with the one he put on Duran.
Duran wins this one in the 1st round and gets taken out of the ring handcuffed and arrested for manslaughter.
Margo would go the distance with Duran because Margo as I've said from the getgo simply takes a better punch than Cuevas. Add to that the fact that Margo is defensively more responsible than Cuevas was and there you go. There is nothing here to support the idea that Duran busts Margo up inside. Clottey landed head shots but couldn't land to the body at all. Margo is very responsible with his body inside. And Clottey defensively is sharper than Duran ever was. He keeps a high guard all the time so that made it difficult for Margo to get his uppercuts off inside. Like I said I'd take Duran's experience on points. But he isn't knocking Margarito out. Horse of a different color here.
Clottey isn't the defensive fighter Duran was, not by a long shot. Duran was vary versatile defensively. Could slip punches, roll with punches, pick shots off - and do so fighting from the outside and on the inside. Margarito wouldn't find Duran an easy target with the uppercut. Clottey is a very basic defensive fighter. Simply uses the traditional African high-guard.
Based on what? The fact that he never got KO'd by Tommy Hearns? That's more due to the fact that he never fought Tommy Hearns. You're making Margo out to be some kind of skilled defensive fighter now? Cuevas held the higher guard, tighter guard, since that seems to be something you're jumping on. Are you serious? My God..... I disagree, I don't see a man who's open to be hit lasting the distance with a much more skilled fighter in every way, especially when he's deciding to play that game. Margo would be outclassed.
your whole post seem to be a more then a bit off when your comparing cintron Hearns and how Cuevas should have handled Hearns .. Hearns at 147 out class Cintron in boxing skill , speed and punching power and experience ,, Cuevas had no choice but to back up from hearn because of his jab and the flow of his combo's ... inside or out Cuevas never stood a chance against the swarming Hearns ,, who by the way finished Cuevas with a short right hand.
Hearns might have hurt Margo but that's besides the point. We're talking about Duran here. For Duran to hurt Margo he'd have to land right on the end of one of his big punches. That's not easy to do with a guy who smothers your work inside and forces you to back up all night. Cuevas was somewhat like Margo but he fancied his chances at range too much against better boxers with big punches. There is no secret why Cintron couldn't hang with Margo. Margo knows how to handle big punchers. Also another reason why he hasn't been stopped.
