I popped a woody when Duran TKO'd Moore in round 8. It was indeed a pro beating the crap outta an amateur.. As for Davey Moore getting into the ring to fight Roberto Duran just after having a wisdom tooth yanked, it was because Moore and his team needed / wanted that MILLION dollar purse without delay... Moore thought Duran was washed-up, and would be easy pickens for a nice payday.. Team Moore made a blunder with that assumption... Roberto Duran trained his ass off for the 'Cuevas' fight and he kept on training until he met Moore five months later in June of '83... At any rate, it was a great victory....:thumbsup MR.BILL
After that title win over Iran Barkley in '89 there would be no more miracles left over for Roberto Duran. However, there were some "HOT" flashes of a once great fighter.. I thought Roberto Duran looked great at age 42 and 163 3/4 pounds when he fought and lost a close shave fight to Vinny Pazienza in 1994... I thought Roberto Duran looked sluggish and heavy at 167 3/4 pounds in 1995 for his rematch fight / loss to Vinny Paz on pay-per-view... BUT! I was amazed at how good Roberto Duran looked and fought in 1996 against Hector Camacho weighing in at 157 pounds... In my book, Duran got shafted by the judges; Duran really beat Camacho in that fight... Later in 1997, Roberto Duran split a pair of fights with the rugged Jorge Casrto, but the real magic of Roberto Duran was gone by then.... The title shot at 160 against William Joppy should NEVER had taken place.. I WANTED Duran to win, but deep down, I knew I was dreaming.. The result was ugly, too.... I didn't see Duran fight again until 2001, when he had his rematch with Hector Camacho. This time Camacho out boxed a 50 year old Roberto Duran who still proved tough, but also slow.... Christ, even Camacho was slower at age 39.... The rest is history....:hi: MR.BILL
he felt hed been disrespected and written of by a large section of the boxing community who actually picked davey to win.. the thing ill never forget is how long the ref let it go.. davey was litterally being used as a punching bag until finally the ref casually steps in... its almost as if he was saying to duran "ok roberto youve proved your point, thatll do buddy" and where was daveys corner???
Leon Washington was Moore's head trainer, and also, an idiot in denial. Yes, without a doubt, Moore's corner should have halted the massacre after the 7th round... The 8th round was just icing on the cake for Duran....:tong MR.BILL
Whoever was in the Moore corner and thought this fight would be good for him... it's just impossible to imagine. Regardless of No Mas, you do not put a fighter with just 10 pro fights, however good he may be, in with a Roberto Duran. Not just because of the jump in class, but they had to know what Duran might be capable of doing in there, especially since he was in one of his stretches where he was staying in good shape. Duran's work, both legal and illegal, is done beautifully in this fight. It's also one of the best cases that I can remember, (where there was good quality footage anyway) of Duran's head movement. He just does an incredible job of slipping around Moore's punches, or is always turning his head to lessen the impact. Still, watching it puts a real bad taste in my mouth. As does the job done by the ref, there was really no need for Moore to continue getting beat that long.
Perhaps because Moore was sooooo inexperienced it made it easy for Duran to implement such dirty tactics. Tho already a good and effective fighter per natural ability , GREAT heart and a fine blend of hand speed and power Moore had no experience or idea at all how to negate both Duran's skill AND ability to fight dirty. Duran fought a great fight from every angle.
He also laced him one time. I don't like watching this fight and will avoid it if possible. I think Davey took far too much punishment and the ref and his corner were utter tools for letting it go on round after round. There is a saying that nobody is as brave with a fighter's blood as his cornerman, and Moore's corner was pathetic that night.
Betting changed late on with money pouring into Duran. I heard a rumour about Moore requiring some kind of dental work or something like that in the lead up to the fight and was put under some kinf of anaesthetic. I don't know if it's true or not. Moore was considered to be the next big thing at the time.
Its something your trainer should tell you early, and if he doesn't your corner should. Duran got away with 1 foul, and kept fouling until either Moore or the ref stopped him, neither happened. A fighter bending the rules isn't the worst thing because hes fighting for his life hes got to use every available trick.
I disagree. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the fact is Duran hadn't done anything for more than 3 years. The Cuevas win was considered nothing special as Cuevas too had been struggling badly and was thought to be washed up as well. On top of this the average Laing (underrated i am told) had beaten Duran as well. Duran really was seen to be washed up and was at the time considered pretty much universally a great learning choice for the improving Moore. No-one could predict the intensity that Duran would bring to this match. Plain unlucky.
