I don't remember fearing for Moore's safety before the fight like we all in hindsight probably should have. His beating a regarded Charlie Weir fairly easily and then zapping Gary Guiden (whom I actually had the opportunity to train with here in Indy and was quire scary in person to watch) with not that much drama made me think he would overcome Duran with energy and punchrate. I think the poster who mentioned the Cuevas win being taken not-that-seriously at the time was right. I thought Cuevas was written off the charts completely after the Herman Montes fight and I didn't think he was durable enough to compete with even a lazy Duran at that juncture.
Davey Moore was a 4 to 1 favorite to beat Roberto Duran up in New York back in '83.... Moore was hot with his career going into that fight with Duran... Davey Moore had already beaten Ayub Kalule & Gary Guiden on T.V. and was on the rise... Meanwhile, Roberto Duran was an aging 31 year old fighter struggling to make 154 pounds for Christ sake. Going in against Moore in June of '83, Roberto Duran looked like a tub of goo against Jimmy Batten at 157 pounds in late 1982, but then looked slender and conditioned against a faded Pipino Cuevas at 152 pounds in early 1983... That KO over Cuevas convinced Bob Arum to match Duran with Davey Moore, and the rest is history..... Duran was a savage animal on the night he massacred Davey Moore at the Garden in New York... Then came the 'Hagler' fight.... Marvin Hagler was / is an entirely different animal compared to Davey Moore.... Davey Moore (1959-1988) Killed in a FREAK car accident.....:yikes MR.BILL P.S. I used to have Moore against Buster Drayton on tape.. Drayton stopped Moore in around 9 rds... Moore was never the same after his comeback win over Benitez....
Off topic but, I just reviewed Sal Sanchez' KO over Wilfredo Gomez from 1981..... Sanchez also gave Gomez a terrible ass-whoopin' over 8 rds, until Carlos Padilla stopped the fight after Gomez went down by a wicked Sanchez assault... Gomez was game, but severly out-gunned...atsch MR.BILL
Honestly though, even if you consider Duran washed up, I don't know how his corner wouldn't have the thought of: "hey, remember ten years ago when Duran was fighting like a vicious animal all the time, sometimes fouling people for no reason? Do you think there's a chance he might try to do that against Davey?" Between that, Duran's past greatness, Moore's greenness.. it just strikes me as a bad idea all around.
Yeah, I heard rumors too. I watched an episode of HBO Real Sports where an organized crime figure said he and his goons put up a lot of money on Duran because they knew Moore wasn't in good physical condition and was sick and shouldn't have been fighting. I can't remember exactly what he said it was though, I don't remember it being dental work.
I remember all the buildup at the time leading up to the fight and no-one was predicting this. Some thought Duran might have a few moments but no-one forecast anything like this. A few alarm bells rang when people saw what sort of shape and intensity Duran brought tho. Duran was thought to be a great choice.
Nobody seems to recall that "Duran & Moore" were actually suppose to fight in May of 1983 in South Africa along with Ray Mancini and Kenny Bogner on the undercard..... Frank Sinatra was even gonna do a "Live" performance as well... BUT! The whole thing fell apart for some strange reason and the card was scraped... Peace...
Well Whether Duran was a bit dirty that fight or not,Hearns taught him the meaning of pain a bit later.
I think the way Tommy took out hearns was relatively painless, especially in comparison to the Beating Moore took. In a way it's sad that Duran never was beaten up in his career, since it would have been poetic justice. But Duran was that good. Assuming Moore did have a lower wisdom pulled shortly before the fight, he most likely shouldn't have fought. But how do you pull out of a fight like that, for a tooth. Especially in your hometown against what was perceived to be a shot Duran. Overall I lay the blame on Moore's corner :fire, and the lack of a ref in attendance :fire, it's incumbent on them to watch out for fighter's welfare. Davey Moore would have 49 years old now. I believe he graduated from Adlai Stevenson High school in the Bronx.
Leon Washington was a money hungry cheerleader...... Also, Duran was thought to be easy prey by the gamblers.. Christ, Moore was a 4 to 1 favorite going into the fight.. Team Moore wanted that MILLION dollar payday WITHOUT DELAY! They F@#ked Up and took Roberto Duran at age 32 for granted... Peace... MR.BILL:rasta
