I recently rewatched Roberto Duran's fight against Davey Moore and was blown away by what a terrific fight and overwhelming performance he gave .. Moore was not an experienced fighter but he was a very talented , natural 154 pounder with strength, speed and power .. he had three title wins behind him .. the way Duran took him apart was insane .. the left hooks to the body round after round were vicious .. the myth that he fouled his way to victory is a myth .. in fact for most of the fight it was Moore pushing the envelope my hitting late, hitting on the break, etc .. Duran also took some monster shots along the way .. it was a clinic by an amazing fighter, fighting twenty pounds over his best weight against a physically gifted champion .. to me it may have been Duran's second or third best performance ..

I remember feeling sorry for Moore watching that fight. From the 4th round you could see the confidence draining from him and later on confusion and hurt written all over his face while Roberto looked like he was loving every second of it. The crowd going crazy for Duran didn't help Davy either.
Magnificent performance from a Duran showing all his mastery and total natural understanding of fighting which rescued his career and kept him going for years. Conversely, poor Davy was totally finished.

A watershed bout for both Fighters and, with utter ruthlessness, Duran just ran away with it, by means of clinical savagery.

Moore's corner and the referee did him no favours that night.
I can't understand why they let it continue for so long. Just left him at Duran's mercy, and Duran was all business and in mood to show any mercy !
Even the actual stoppage it seemed the crowd reaction near the ropes (including Sylvester Stallone among others) actually almost forced the referee to take action there.

It's sad the name Davey Moore is associated with tragedy in boxing.
There was the featherweight killed in the title fight back in (? 1963, I think) ..... then this guy with the same name, won a title so soon and took this unnecessary beating so early in his career, and a few years later died in that awful accident where he was trapped under his car on his driveway.

Maybe I'm superstitious but if any young fighters out there are going by the name Davey Moore, I'd advise them to change it.

Ernesto Magana refereed that bout. He was pathetic. Duran was tremendous.

Their was a lot of focus placed on the thumb to the eye
Moore received from Duran, as if that was the reason
    he lost.
But Duran put on a clinic of body
punching , slick slipping and countering and angles.
Moore wouldn't have beaten Duran that night with
    a baseball bat his hands.

Plenty of boxers have won fights with impaired vision. Frazier did it most of his career. Watch the fight, Duran's body punching was getting to Moore as early as the 2nd rd. Well before the eye became an issue.
