Yes but it led to him not being able to continue. He survived about 3/4 of a round on a broken ankle before trying to fight on in the second. Gutsy effort.

    True.
But then again Benitez was probably shot too.

Yeah, it was a good punch to be fair.

Absolutely. Benitez did however survive the rest of the round on a broken foot.

As you sort of point out Benitez had gone downhill fast post Hearns. Davey Moore went downhill fast post Duran too. Well you could argue he was never really that good too. He had some wars in rapid succession against good fighters before Duran.

I don't remember water playing any role in this. You mean like an in the corner kind of a thing where they were both slipping? Did it effect the outcome?

No fighter in history looks better on film than Roberto Duran

Agree. First watched the bout in 1990 - and it is still one of the two or three worst displays of 'refereeing' I've ever seen. Moore was getting his brains beaten out and that ***** of a ref didn't care. Those final two rounds make for a grotesque spectacle. Mantegna should never have been allowed in the ring again. And If I've misspelled his name - so what? Despise the guy.

I actually thought Moore had some good moments. Hard to believe Duran was the underdog, he was ruthless. Reminded me of his performance vs Barkley.

Moore was thoroughly destroyed in that fight and n ever really recovered from it. The fight should have been stopped much sooner Duran beat him to a pulp. Thumb in the eye or not Duran was going to beat Moore, the body shots he hit Moore with alone seemed to lift him off the canvas.
