I got this idea from another thread (Duran/Hagler & Napoles/Monzon), and don't know if we have done it before...and frankly i was to lazy to search and see?

Who wins between these two guys @

    LW, WW & MW? how/why???

I didn't bother to do a poll, because 80% of people vote but don't explain, discuss or debate....so who ya got?

Napoles would have been too quick and clever for Duran...and would have made him pay with hurtfull shots. No unnecessary standing and trading like leonard did in Montreal either. He would have outclassed Duran like Benitez did, only, like I said, with more hurt in his punches. Napoles was DeJesus "squared".

I'd go with Duran's crisper sharper game (IMO)

Even match. Unless Duran can inflict a cut, this one could easily go either way, point-wise. One bout couldn't possibly determine whose better. A trilogy is fitting for this pairing at least.

Napoles was the better welterweight, per se,but I can see the 'Montreal' Duran beating Napoles on points. Mantequilla would win any rematches though.

Stevie, I think Napoles would have beaten the Montreal Duran narrowly on points. I don't believe that he would have chosen the wrong syle and approach to fight that version of Duran like Leonard did. Just my opinion. I think Duran would not have been as consumed with hatred as much for Mantequilla as he was for SRL, and would have had more respect for him.

You have really been overrating the hell out of Napoles, red.

I think the most intriguing fight here is around '74. A just peaking Duran against a very slightly faded Napoles. Duran is moving up, but Napoles is not a huge welter. Great to see if Napoles brilliant punch picking will keep Duran off. I think it will, and he'll take a close, hard decision.

Of course against Montreal Duran, Napoles is exposed as the Cuban Henry Cooper.

I don't think Napoles is Dejesus squared per se, there's six and half a dozen between them in most respects as boxer-punchers, but the fact that Napoles was a fair bit bigger and thus a more dangerous opponent physically mean it could turn out that way in reality, with the obvious expection that Duran did handle the weight jump when given time.

However a jump straight up to 147 in the early 70s without getting used to things there could well result in that sort of scenario and defeat for Duran.

Great thread Philly!!..its a tough one but Im thinking in a 15 rounder, Duran either gets him outa there in the later rounds or wins the decision.

I don't believe that I have ever implied that one before either in this thread or any other! Actually I am a big respecter (Sorry only a Phan of Philly Phighters) of Duran....I do think Napoles would beat Duran by a narrow margin, but on the flip side I rank Duran as greater.
