Duran vs. Toney at 160

How can you pick Duran in this match up?

No way he can win. Not a chance. Not even a puncher's chance.

 

Both stood in the pocket, but Duran didnt have the defensive countering skills that Toney had, plus Toney would have been 160 not 260. Toney would have countered the wild swinging Duran to death and stopped him early.

 

Nah, Duran's defensive countering skills upclose are monstrous.Of course not so much at middleweight and the workrate would be too much for him as long as Toney doesn't come in out of shape.

Big fan of Duran, and much less so of Toney.

And Duran could beat Toney on certain nights.


But best version of both men at 160 ?

Toney, 10 times out of 10.

 

There's so much wrong with this, even though I agree that Toney would most likely win provided he showed up on form.

 

Duran is all wrong for Toney, i feel. Toney was unproven and untested at MW, like Jones Jr, Benn and Calzaghe were. Post-colonic Duran takes this one as well. Iran Barkely mother ****ers.

Toney would be too fast for Duran. TKO stoppage around 8 rounds.. I suspect you mean the Duran who fought Barkley? The one who fought Hagler might be a tossup since James was inexperienced when he fought at 160.

 

Let's see, Duran, a blown up lightweight vs. Toney, an anorexic Cruiserweight.

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of "what if" fights I see on this site. Most of the time they are so ridiculous, I have to think some people have way too much time on their hands.

 

You do know that Toney was in his prime as a Middleweight, right? And that Duran held his own with Hagler at the weight, right? Not as ludicrous a match-up as you're making it out to be.

 

Duran of the Barkley fight gets whuuped... Be a little fair and atleast let the Duran of the Hagler fight represent. That Duran could probably beat a young James Toney. The one who fought Nunn,RJohnson etc.

But by the time JT fought Mccallum i think he would have beat any Mw version of Duran.

Yep, I'm of an age that I saw Duran fight his first fights on TV here in the states at 135 and just because he fought at 160 and above doesn't mean he was as good a fighter at that weight. Most of his losses came fighting above welter.

Toney fought in that 160-170 weight range for about the first 5 years of his career and was very good there. My point is this type matchup is like comparing apples to oranges. Let's change the weight around and say they fight at 135 where Duran was a beast, then it's ludicrous to imagine Toney at that weight

 

:huhOK, except that's not what we're doing, we're comparing them at 160 pounds. That's that. Nobody is saying that Duran was as good at Middleweight as he was at Lightweight (far from it), but when on form he was still a very formidable fighter who happens to match up well enough stylistically with Toney. Still, Toney's edge in all physical aspects (size, speed, strength, power) should give him the competitive but clear points verdict provided he comes in on form.

I agree with Anarci's post. The Toney of the McCallum fight in particular would've won this one handily, mainly due to that jab.
