Does this fight go differently than their actual encounter did? Does Tommy being more green then, than he would be years later when they met change things at all? On a side note: While it obviously worked great, I'm not certain it was Hearns best strategy most of the time to go inside and mix it up with Duran inside and make it a war. He ran from SRL once he got hurt, and only tried to box and move. So it seems unnecessary to mix it up like that with somebody who has power and excellent at countering. Yet he approached it like his fight with Hagler, he was aggressive and came to KO Duran. Worked great, and maybe is the best way, but I have a feeling (not many do if at all) that mixing it up that way could've ended badly for Tommy. Others feel it's always a white wash and I disagree slightly there. I think it's not because at that stage Tommy still didn't know how to survive all that well, and if he gets hurt with Duran, I don't think it ends well for him. He obviously has most all the physical advantages and a big favorite, I just don't see it certain as others I suppose. He KO'd the Duran brutally and quickly and it was damn impressive. regardless
to many X factors for me ..what weight is the fight at? do they both stay down or move up? Duran is going to do way better because he will be 3 years younger, but he can't be in party boy mode in between fights, SRL and Tommy way to great of fighters to do that crap with ,, I'll take the Duran of Montreal to break down Tommy and get a late KO
I think Hearns was just all wrong for Duran at Welterweight and above. Pound for pound I’d take Duran for certain but not at 147.
Hearns style would have always gotten Duran. The speed was the biggest issue, not the height and reach. Let me rephrase. the speed was the thing which combined with the height and reach made the difference. Height and reach is fine, but Hearns had the speed and experience to make it deadly.
The Montreal Duran knocks out Thomas Hearns. Duran was quick then, so quick it bothered a quick fighter Sugar Ray Leonard.
The fight in 1984 the difference in speed and how easily Hearns hit Duran and hurt him proves Hearns would hurt him at welterweight also. I think Duran has a better chance at 168 in 1989 than earlier. Believe it or not, since Hearns diminished by then. The welterweight Hearns I think destroys Duran in 3 or 4.. Hearns was not Leonard. He punched harder and he would not play around. He would stop Duran.
The fight taking place a few years earlier benefits Duran, in my opinion. We can't tell what a second victory over Leonard would or would not do for Duran's motivation. It would probably need to take place at 154, as Duran was a bloater by then (and him beating Leonard in the rematch, having dabbed the last bit of gravy of his King's banquet from his lips, just prior, wouldn't help that situation). We can only speculate, as to whether Hearns was ready for 154 and that level of competition in 1981. There's no doubt a whole load of other potential variables to consider for this imaginary scenario.
Hearns would have thrashed in every weight division they fought in during their careers from welterweight upwards. If ever a guy’s style and physical shortcomings were perfectly made for another, it was Duran against Hearns.
It is obvious to me. The speed of Hearns and height. It was just like hitting a punching bag either a counter or setting up. Against Hearns it is a matter of how long will Duran last and how many rights will he take. Duran really was hard to knock out. Hearns is one of the only ones who could really do it.
So you think that Hearns, who Leonard stopped is going to destroy Duran at 147 pounds in 3 rounds? interesting.
He didn't go inside with Duran. He took advantage of his tremendous size advantage and punished Duran from long range. I don't see much of a difference if they fought at welter before Leonard.
You don't think age and weight would factor in much? Duran would be 3 years younger, lighter and move better .. adv for him. Tommy would be 3 years younger .. 22, less exp., and not 25 .. disadv for him. …..
I love Duran but don't ever envision him beating Hearns under any circumstances. I don't see a younger Duran getting splattered in a couple of rounds though.
