magi1965 is a *****. I don't know where he got the idea that a fighter whose built is quite big to be a lightweight would have a problem with a fighter who started at 106 or a fighter who is a pitter-patter puncher. SRL can bang hard, Gayweather cannot. Imagine Castillo....... multiply it several times.
I am not a Mayweather fan to be honest. But I know styles and how Duran does against fast guys who use the ring. Duran never fought a Mayweather level fighter until 1980
So what if Duran never fought someone of Mayweather level until 1980. Mayweather never fought a Duran level up to now.
I really don't like Mayweather, but I'm on the fence about Duran beating him, and I really like Duran. Duran had so much trouble with SRL in their rematch that he went "No Mas". When Leonard decided to box from the outside and not get involved in a slugfest, it totally frustrated Duran enough so that he quit. However, I'm not sold on Mayweather's heart to take what Duran could offer as an opponent. I do wish that fight could be made though, it would be interesting for as long as it lasted.
Duran quit in frustration because he had totally ****ed up his preparation coming into that fight and the rematch was too soon after the first fight, for Duran to have sufficient hunger to be Duran again. That first Leonard fight was like climbing a Mount Everest, once you do that, just about nothing else can compare for some time, if ever. There is little reason to believe that if Leonard had tried the tactics of No Mas against an inspired Duran in Montreal, that it would have worked for Leonard. This what Angelo Dundee had to say leading into Montreal : Dundee substantiated this in his autobiography. Leonard’s strategy became certain from the moment that he watched the films and deconstructed Duran’s style. Duran, he said, was a “heel-to-toe guy. He takes two steps to get to you. So the idea was not to give him those two steps, not to move too far away because the more distance you gave him, the more effective he was. What you can’t do in the face of Duran’s aggression was run from it, because then he picks up momentum. My guy wasn’t going to run from him.” From Springs Toledo's excellent Gods of War series
he fought Oscar and Shane. He has not looked for the challenges that is for sure, but stylewise he could beat Duran no problem. It isn't about being a fan and backing him up no matter what, it is about being objective.
You seem unable to recognise that the Duran after Montreal was very different to the one leading up to Montreal. Floyd has ZERO chance against Montreal Duran.
Floyd has a very good chance against any version of Duran. Floyd would fight his fight and win a UD. What fighter did Duran beat which shows he can beat Floyd? You might answer Leonard, but Floyd never fought other guys fights. Ray did and lost, and then in the rematch beat Duran relatively easy.
As Leonard himself said, he had no choice but to fight Duran's fight in Montreal, because he couldn't keep Duran off him. In the rematch, Duran was weight drained and lacking motivation(and clearly never the same fighter again), that is why Leonard was able to do what he couldn't in Montreal. Floyd doesn't belong in a conversation with Leonard and Duran.
