Duran's Weight Loss Prior To Hearns

    Sounds like it was almost as bad as the Leonard II ordeal. I'd never heard this before. It's from a Sports Illustrated article.

    On June 15, 1984, Hearns knocked out Duran in two rounds. It was a junior middleweight title fight.

    No matter, says Duran, who claims hat he didn't expect that fight to happen and that 17 days before it he weighed 188 pounds, 34 over the junior middleweight limit. "I don't count that me," he says.

    Why wouldn't he expect the fight to happen just 17 days away?

    Duran (or his fans) used that weight excuse for everything.

    He wasnt at his best for Hearns...no excuses, he just wasnt.

    That does not in anyway take away from one of Tommy's most brutal wins.

    duran would've gotten knocked out anyway. he was scared shitless of hearns.

    the way he acts in that fight is very un-duran. he looked scared at the staredown, and he was touching gloves all throughout the fight. DURAN TOUCHING GLOVES! doesn't happen.

    Duran lost plenty of weight for Hearns in 1984, but he was close to weight by June 1st........ Duran was announced at 178 at the March press conference..... Duran was already in training and in the midst of shedding weight...... STILL! I did notice that Duran looked drained and listless come fight night........ But Hearns was too primed in '84 to lose that fight.........

    After reading the biography "Hands of Stone", I tend to take Duran's stories with a grain of salt.

    He has an excuse for damn near every poor performance.

    "Leonard didn't beat me (1989 fight), the IRS beat me"

    "I couldn't train right because I was on an island with a bunch of convicts"

    "I hurt my arm in a car accident"

    I know what you're saying. Great fighter, **** poor loser. Jeff Fenech is similar in his book, with plenty of excuses in wins as well :lol:

    I guess the competitiveness is what makes some performers into what they are.

    I liked Fenech's excuse for losing to Nelson. He said he was banging 5 women a day.

    His whole point in going to that island was to be around nothing but convincts. Now because he lost, it's his excuse for losing. :roll:

    Duran gets a free pass for everything. Not from me, he got sparked by Hearns and outclassed in the Leonard rematch.

    Duran did seem to have a respect for Hearns that he didn't for anybody else. He never seemed to try to get in his head and intimidate him...very strange!!!

    Duran appeared flat for the Hearns fight, he had not spark. He entered the ring, then went and sat on his stool in the corner. Simply wasn't ready to fight.
