Duran's Weight Loss Prior To Hearns

Duran didn't appear mentally prepared. But the real problem was Hearns. The styles are all wrong. Hearns is an extraordinary boxer. Combined with his size and power, Duran was in trouble on paper.

The height, speed and youth of Hearns caused Duran lotsa' problems........... Duran took the fight because of the 2.5 million dollar payday........ His conditioning was not good............. Duran lost too much weight way too quickly for Hearns, and then ate like a horse the day of the fight, only to enter the ring bloated and sluggish........ Duran getting parked was a given......... Peace..........

Yes, he did. He said Carlos Eleta put him on that island in order to keep him from straying from his training.

 

He touched gloves, he didn't have that same ice cold look at the stare-down, it even says in the book Hands Of Stone that Duran was afraid of him. Fear is one thing nobody would ever associate with the great Duran - except when it came to Hearns. Hearns had him shook.

 

I assume that is a joke.

I don't care either way about basically any of the Fab 4 in terms of being a fan or disliking them. Actually I'm like that with most fighters. Love the sport, indifferent about most fighters.

 

Duran's weight loss problem / problems were NOT excuses........ They were for real.......... If Duran was not motivated or pushed hard in training, making weight for his fights in the 1980s were a struggle........ After 1980, Duran and his conditioning was always an issue..........

If Duran was not "motivated or pushed hard" coming in against a fighter like Thomas Hearns then maybe i need to re-assess the guy.

This is what others in the thread have already pointed out, he gets a free pass for basically anything and everything, and here it is, the perfect example.

Refusing to swallow Duran's excuses for each and every fight does not make someone a "hater". I'd be thinking more along the lines of astute and careful. Of course Duran is far from on his Pat Malone regarding excuses.

 

Dont be shocked, I like Duran, he`s one of my favourite fighters but he is a terribly sore loser, terribly sore.

 

The weight loss was simply Roberto shitting his pants when he came face to face with Hearns to promote the fight.

 

If thats true, Duran lost two lbs every day for 17 consective days prior to the bout! Two lbs is not a lot, but it all adds up & to keep doing it would no doubt take its toll!

 

Worse, he was over 200 pounds at one point in camp.

Would have been the same result, though..

 

If Duran did not **** himself in '83 while fighting Hagler, I seriously doubt that Hearns could install any fear into Duran in '84....... However, Duran was not in good mental or great physical shape against Hearns...........

When Duran came into that hot-ass Vegas ring in June of 1984 to fight Hearns, Duran looked like he just crawled outta bed with a couple of wild whores..... He had none of the old "Balboa" eye of the tiger in him at that juncture.......

I knew that Duran was not gonna beat a prime Hearns in '84 in a boxing match..... Duran's only chance was to get low and get inside and work Hearns' body.......... But Hearns was too fast and peaked to be denied in 1984 at 154 pounds....... Duran was wickedly KO'd........... I'm no longer shocked or surprised after thinking the whole thing over........ At the time, I was bummed....... Not anymore.......

I think Duran knew that Hearns's style was a far bigger obstacle to overcome. And I also reckon that Duran feared Hearns's power more than Hagler's. While Hagler was naturally bigger compared to Hearns and was a strong middleweight, when it came to the sheer power of Hearns, exclusive long range boxing ability, and thundering right hand ability down the pipe, it's understandable. The speed, the height and reach, and also the power.

Personally, I'd rather take a whack off a prime Hagler at middleweight than a peak Hearns at jr middlweight. I think Duran was the same.
