hi everybody, this is my first post, durran v de la hoya durran points or late stoppage at his peak i think durran would beat anybody up to welterweight from any era
I doubt if he'd have beaten Hearns, even at his best. But yes he'd have beaten Oscar handily, either by clear Decision or late stoppage.
So you don't see Hearns as just a bad matchup for him? I certainly do, regardless of which versions we're taking. Hearns's height, reach, speed, and power would always give the much shorter Duran problems getting inside without taking a beating, which is pretty much the only place he'd be effective.
Wow. I already told the hell out of the idiot who brought this up in the Classic Forums. Oscar should not be mentioned in the same breath as the Great Legendary Duran. A good analogy if they had fought at Welterweight. Remember the opening scene in JAWS? A naked Oscar runs into the ocean, in the pale moonlight (Calm down Beware, it's not about sex) at Amity Beach. He dives into the breakers, and swims out about 30 feet out. His date, a drunken guy from Manhattan is on the beach, trying to take off his clothes as well, but is so drunk he passes out on the beach. Oscar..................."Come on in the water!!!" Drunken Guy........."Here I come.....I can swim.....haha...I just can't walk or undress myself....(Passes the **** out) (Under the dark Depths, a 26 foot Panamanian Great White Shark senses movement, in the water. It turns, and swims at 95 MPH towards the beach, where it's radar detects food at the surface.) Oscar............."Well, this is boring. I guess he is afraid to skinny dip" TA DUM.....TA DUM TADUM TADUM TADUM!!! Oscar is violently tugged underwater for a second, and feels as if a massive mouth filled with daggars has grabbed one leg. He reaches under the water with his hand, and feels the nub of raw bone and ripped off flesh, to his horror, he has no right leg. Oscar................AHHHHHUGGH OH MY GOD, HELP!!! The Panamanian Great White latches unto the other leg and dives, taking a horrified Oscar with him, screaming underwater, as his brain senses that he is the victim of a shark attack. His last thoughts were that he and his date should have stayed on the beach, before a lack of oxygenated blood mercifully takes his consciousness for the last time. :deal
That's the way I see it too. Hearns is just a bad style for Duran and he would likely beat him at 147. Having said that what happens in one fight doesn't necessary repeat itself in another. Witness the two fights Lewis had with Rahman and McCall. So it's possible that Duran could give a better account of himself then was the case when him and Hearns actually fought.
I agree, and I definitely think he would have given a much better account of himsef, I just don't see him winning. Even if he were able to take the punishment needed to get on the inside at times, Duran would've needed a substantial amount of time to work in order to break his opponent's down, especially at WW. While Leonard was able to do it because he possessed the one punch power needed to hurt Hearns whenever he caught him, Duran was more of an accumulation puncher and wouldn't be able to rely on a gameplan of that nature as strongly. I can see Duran taking a couple of rounds, but for the most part he'd just be unable to work his game, and either gets stopped late or loses by wide UD.
Duran at welter OUTBOXED a Leonard who was superior in every way to your overrated hero Pernel. Oscar doesnt have the skills or the heart of a Leonard, and I doubt that Oscar would have had the balls to even face Duran at WW.
If you are interested in this one, there was actually a thread made yesterday on this exact topic. My money is on Duran in this one for reasons already mentioned. Also, Hearns is hell for Duran at any weight. If they fought five more times, I doubt Duran ever gets sparked again in the second round, but he just will always have trouble with Hearns.
Even not a comparison...ive seen many fights of both man and Duran would have SMOKED Dlh ...Duran has way more workrate, fire power and STAMINA than Oscar + he would have taken oscar punch...
Hearns was too big for Duran just like Bhop for Dlh...they were both too physically strong for their opponents especially Hearns...
at his peak and at welterweight durrans sheer ferocity would wear hearns down esprcially over 15 rounds. sweet pea was also a damm good fighter.
