Pressure vs. pressure, two great chins. Lets say Joe's moved up to LHW a few years ago, so he's in his prime but a bit over 168. Winner?
Calzaghe would've been a light-heavyweight under the old weigh-in rules. Let's say he was around 175 during that great late 70s/early 80s era. I don't see Joe beating Qawi. I'd say he also loses to Spinks, and probably Saad. Eddie Mustafa Muhammad was inconsistent, he'd have to really be on his game, a la the Marvin Johnson fight, to beat Calzaghe. Calzaghe would be the favorite against Johnson.
Dwight was so brutally strong in his prime. I think he'd hunt down and eventually catch up to Joe. Dwight had excellent skills that suited his stocky frame and was a seriously bad man.:smoke :smoke
Another in agreement with the above statement here. Joe's slaps would bounce of Dwight like a peashooter hitting a tank. Dwight would catch up with him at some point. Agree also that Spinks would be a hard case for him, I think he has a chance to outpoint Saad but Matt could certainly catch Joe. I think Eddie Mustafa may have been the most talented of the bunch, but as thread stealer said he was inconsistant for some reason.
Id favor Calzaghe in this fight. He is too fast for qawi. If Joe fought conservative and didnt stick his chin out there, i see him easily taking a decision here with his flurries. bad style mtach up for qawi
His flurries would leave him at a disadvantage if he tried to engage with Qawi. His footspeed is the thing that makes this matchup interesting. The difference between a guy like Qawi and Toney is that Qawi was very effective at pressuring, whereas Toney was at his best when the opponent came to him and fought at his range and pace. We've rarely if ever seen Joe strictly on the move though, so I'm not sure how he performs against such a relentless buzzsaw like Qawi, who was not only aggressive and bull strong, but very skilled. Very slick defensively, and an excellent counter-puncher with real power.
WHEW! I'm glad this is a theoretical question. I thought for a minute this post was announcing Calzaghe's next fight!
If Joe tries to pressure Dwight he gets swallowed in a sea of well placed counters. Joe would be best served to try counter Dwight, cut his own work rate and concentrate on footwork and angles. Try and catch Qawi coming in from distance and than move. Over 12 rounds, while Joe could win, IMO he would be hard pressed to eek out a decision against Dwight, and he would have to fight very, very well to do so, putting a good amount of early rounds in the bank. Over 15 Dwight probably stops Joe late. He was so strong and unrelenting. Tough matchup for Joe, hell a prime Qawi is a tough match up for anyone. 12 rounds, if they fought 10 times, DMQ wins 7 15 rounds, DMQ wins every time.
Ive always been interested how Joe would have went over 15. He really does have great fitness and stamina. Not only does he keep throwing for 12, he is awkward, fluid and moving up until the final bell.
