Pressure vs. pressure, two great chins.

Lets say Joe's moved up to LHW a few years ago, so he's in his prime but a bit over 168.

    Winner?

JoeCal hits many times,... Dwight hits HARD enough times.

But Joe has never been beaten, so does Dwight have enough
    to eliminate the winner's edge?

Dwight beat up Saad twice.....and George Foreman was the only one to some degree intimidate Dwight.

    Gotta go with Qawi.

Joe would be stepping up into trouble in this one. The Qawi that chewed up Saad twice is a far cry from the Cruiserweight version. Another tall aggressive infighter, James Scott was no match for the "Camden Buzzsaw". Calzaghe would give it his best & score his share of punches, but he would get worn down and eventually Qawi would take over in the late rounds. Dwight Muhammed Qawi 12 TKO.

Tough fight ... don't know how Cal would hold up over 15 at 175 ... favor Qwai since Cal lacks the Spinks like power necessary to keep him off and outbox him ...

Qawi would win this one, i use the term a lot but he's a bad bad style match for Joe IMO without needing to go into it much.

Unfair match-up for Calzaghe. I mean, at a tad over 168 he wouldn't be big or strong enough for a monster like Qawi.

Calzaghe could have fought at LHW for much of his career, actually.

True, more of a LHW than a MW really.

I have to agree with JT and go with Qawi. Both men would be throwing clusters of punches. It would be Calzaghe's superior defence versus Qawi's more numbing power.

In a h2h sense I think Qawi is a very tricky customer and would give all of the greats a hard fight.

It's not an unfair matchup. Calzaghe has long talked about the weight problems he had at 168, in the era of weigh-ins the day before the fight.

Given that, he'd probably have fought at 175 in the early 80s when Qawi was fighting, even if there was 168 around then.

    Qawi should win.

I dont think size would be unfair here...Kessler was thought to be a huge supermiddle and Joe manhandled him, and looked just as big.

The taller (then Qawi) Calzaghe would fill out fine as a lightheavy.

I think thats less of an issue then others for Calzaghe in this fight.

I agree with the consensus, though I think it would be very competitive.

Hello Russell. I was basing my comment on what you actually said at the beginning of the thread. That Joe would be a bit over 168. I mean, why a bit over 168? Why not 174-175? I still feel that if Cal restricted himself to only a bit over 168, say 169-170, he would be at a disadvantage against a quality guy like Qawi.

And for those who say the Cal could have been a LHW for much of his career, remember that Qawi actually went on to become a great Cruiserweight and a pretty good HW. Height is important. But it is not the be all and end all of the matter. As far as being "big' is concerned, height is only one aspect of the issue. Overall, Qawi was just the bigger guy in spite of being way shorter. He was sort of a freak, wasn't he?

I hold Joe Calzaghe in high regard and feel that he was not fully appreciated for much of his career. Only now he is beginning to get his due.

As far as Qawi vs Calzaghe is concerned, I think that Joe, weighing in at the LHW limit, would have given Dwight Muhammad a real contest. But I honestly feel that Qawi would have won.

    Regards.
