Dwight Muhammad Qawi vs. Joe Calzaghe

Calzaghe's quality of opposition has not included fighters on the level of the lightheavyweights who fought in the '70s and early '80s. Not even close. So far, there is no reason to believe that Calzaghe could have beaten the best lightheavies of the '70s and early '80s, including Dwight Qawi.

I think Qawi would have been much too aggressive and strong for Calzaghe.

Also, in my opinion, Saad Muhammad, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, Mike Spinks, Marvin Johnson, Yaqui Lopez, James Scott, Victor Galindez, and John Conteh were clearly better than Calzaghe.

It's not so easy to step up from 168lbs. to 175lbs.

He looks slick because his opponents aren't that good. Calzaghe is good, I'll grant him that, but he is not as good as his fans think he is.

Calzaghe would have been just another contender during Qawi's day, and nothing more.

 

Dwight wins this, do doubt about it.

Joe with his wide punches will get eaten alive by the Camden Buzzsaw, who unlike other fighters who cover up when Joe throws his flurrys Dwight will be firing right back at Joe while he is punching. Dwight feasted on guys who threw wide, looping punches and lets not overlook just how good a defensive fighter Dwight was either.

He slipped and rolled with punches beautifully and was rarely ever tagged cleanly, and even when he was he had the chin to withstand it and against Joe it wouldn`t even be a factor as he doesn`t hit hard enough to get Qawi`s respect like M.Spinks did in their bout. I say Qawi takes Joe out sometime after the 8th, in what would be a entertaining, but ultimately one-sided fight in Dwight`s favour.

 

I would put a lot of money on Qwai. His defense would make Calzaghe look foolish, it made Holyfield look like an amateur at times, and Qwai had big time power at 175. Not saying Calzaghe didn't have a good chin but he would lose by TKO or a close but clear decision 8-4.

If it went 15 I would bet on a Qwai stoppage.

 

Calzaghe has a tough time making the 168 lb. limit under the current weigh in rules.

I'd say if today had the same weigh-in procedures as back then, then Joe would be a light heavyweight.

 

That's because you don't have a clue what the **** you're talking about.

 

Until JoeCal competes successfully at Lthvy, then he is just a great Supermiddle moving up.

Dwight come from the end the Golden Age of the Lightheavies that started with Foster and ended with Spinks.

You could pick 10 LH's from that era that could more than hold their on with JoeCal, based on what we know as of today.

 

Qawi was awesome but so is Calzaghe. Joe is too fast and too good of a boxer. Qawi was always vulnerable to getting outboxed because of his size. Calzaghe would not try and stand and trade with Dwight, he would move and box and win a decision.

 

Tough match up, very tough.

Qawi is my choice.

 

I'd give Qawi a 30% puncher's chance, much better than anyone else around currently. If Joe has no mental lapses, he'd probably cruise to a UD, but Qawi would be able to hurt Joe pretty badly if he connected flush.

 

I'd take Qawi by decision

 

Calzaghe, because styles make fights.

 

DQ could give a rats ass about that workrate. Unless that workrate has some kick behind it. For JC to keep DQ out of his ass he's going to have to earn his respect via power. The guys that really gave DQ trouble had bigtime power for the given weightclass (Spinks, Holyfield).

JC can win, but it's not going to be the same JC we saw against Kessler.
