Hard to say because Joe is 35 and still has never fought at 175, so we have to see how the extra 15lbs effects him but if he does well he has fast hands and movement the kind of style that would trouble Qwawi but I want to see if Joe is stronger at 175lbs and if the xtra weight slows him down

Calzaghe is at 168. That's a 7 pound jump, and Joe is making the weight of 168 under different weigh-in procedures.

If Joe has problems making 168, which he says he does, under the current procedures, don't you think he'd be fighting @ 175 if he had to weigh in on the day of the fight?

Qawi had bad stamina, not so good for him vs. Calzaghe.

That's the same way I see it. Joe would have a significant height, speed, and conditioning advantage, and unless he fought a stupid fight, he'd UD Qawi by a fairly comfortable margin. Qawi's best chance to win would be by KO, and I don't think he can knock Calzaghe out.

Quawi nearly defeated Holyfield. I can't see how he couldn't beat Calzaghe but the again at Light Heavyweight or under you never know. My pick is Quawi on points.

Not trying to hate on Qawi but he has a draw and SD loss in his first three fights. He only fought five title fights at 175 and he was/is naturally bigger than Calzaghe.

Just because James Toney defeated Ruiz does not mean I would pick Toney over Calzaghe at 168 (when JT was capable of making that weight!).

Calzaghe really is great, undefeated and has 20 defences. Prime for prime, I take him against anyone except RJJ, and even there he has a realistic chance at a win.

When you say you'd take him over everybody except Jones, does this mean at 168, 160-168, 160-175, or 168-175?

What does that have to do with anything at all?

Exactly, that kinda helps him in this matchup, ya know?

I might pick Calzaghe over Toney as well at 168, not sure how good Calzaghe works at 175, against someone I'd pick to beat Toney at 175 in Qawi though. Based on the fact that while on the inside, Qawi has accurate offense, great defensive slipping skills, excellent strength, and good workrate at 175, I think it'd be rough for Calzaghe if he tried to do his usual flurry and fight on the inside, rather than simply opting to outbox.

No, he doesn't. And from what weight classes does that include?

Why are people acting like there is some huge weight difference?

Qawi fought at 175 in the early 80s, weighing in the day of the fight.

Calzaghe fights at 168, weighing in a day before the bout, and says he frequently has trouble making the weight.

Yeah but his loss was a split decision and he twice defeated the same guy after who beat him Quawi also gave Michael Spinks a very tough bout. Do you think that Calz could go up to cruiser and nearly beat Holyfield? How would he have faired against Spinks at Light Heavy? Also the one guy who beat Quawi in his first three fights later became a contender who challanged Michael Spinks.

And? Some guys, especially ex-convicts without an extensive amateur background, may take longer to reach a high level.

Qawi fought in arguably the greatest light heavyweight era ever. He fought only a handful of title fights there because he fought a guy who happened to be one of the greatest light heavyweights ever in Michael Spinks.

It is also debatable if Qawi is really naturally bigger than Calzaghe. Logic tells you that Calzaghe would be a light heavyweight if he were in the late 70s and early 80s under those rules (even if there were an 168 lb. division). They'd be fighting in the same weight class.

Do you realize how many great fighters in history fought around the 168 to 175 lb weight range?

Guys like Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, Billy Conn, Harry Greb, Gene Tunney, Michael Spinks, Bob Foster, Harold Johnson, Maxie Rosenbloom, etc..
