Exactly. It wasnt Spinks' movement that gave Qawi trouble. Spinks hurt Qawi, and put him into a bit of a shell. On top of that, Spinks was just a far more intelligent and versatile operator than Hill anyway. Hill isnt hurting Qawi with anything, and Qawi was actually a lot smarter than Hill.
Dwight was a monster for a short while at 175 - still Hill's foot speed is gonna bother him greatly. Prime Braxton had a very hard time with Johnny Davis, was pretty good with his feet. And, we all saw how Spinks funky movement threw Dwight off his game. I think prime Hill can win a close decision over Braxton/Qawi.
Excellent point. Saad tried landing right hands and neglected the lefthook and uppercut. Braxton made him pay time and again. Hill had an excellent jab which he could turn into a hook while simultaneously moving his feet. He's gonna keep Dwight on the outside with the left hand.
It's not a coincidence that Hill got dominated by the first intelligent pressure fighter he faced (DM). Yes, he was past his prime when he fought DM, but that fight showed that if you pressure Hill behind a solid jab to negate his own, he has literally zero answers. The fact that DM beat him basically 11-1 leads me to believe Hill would never won that fight, at any stage of his career. I think you guys are forgetting that Qawi himself had an all time great jab. Certainly among the best jabs of any pressure fighter. And I think you need to keep in mind that although Hill tried to be like Ali, he certainly didn't have Ali's defensive reflexes - he always got hit, by FAR lesser fighters than Qawi. Qawi would beat Hill up.
And what fight did Qwai dominate with his jab? DM had a MUCH better jab then Qawi. Qwai got alot of mileage of beating a used up Saad. He couldnt deal with Spinks in anyway- then after the fight he was "sick". He won a split decision against Johnny Davis. Wow. He beat up a Leon Spinks.Lost a split decision to a green Evander who only had 11 fights and then rematched the year after got crushed in 4 rounds. He would never get close enough to Hill. For all his limits Hill could move all fight.
Talk about looking to put someone down. Apply that same blowtorch to others and see how it looks. Braxton/Qawi stopped Eddie Davis as well, beat the handy Jerry Martin, beat James Scott etc. It's not like he was disgraced against Spinks either. Christ, Spinks is in the running for best fighter at 175 ever. A flip side might be that he was the one that put the lid on Saad. Maybe he would have beat him at any point of his career.
You as I know Saad was not at his best. Way tooo many wars prior to Braxton. James Scott was a good win but prior to that Scott lost and was slowing down. I mean ask yourself these two questions: who had a more impressive title reign Braxton or Saad? How many rounds truthfully did you give Braxton vs Spinks? I bet it wasnt more then 5 and thats being generous. It wasnt like after the Braxton bouts Saad went on a run- he was done. I rhink Braxton was a good fighter but some posters act like he had some type of rise like a young Tyson in where he just leveled everyone in under 3 rounds. His biggest challenge in which many people favored him in was vs Spinks and he fell flat. Spinks showed that he couldnt deal with sustained movement at all. Sure Spinks could punch but how many times did he truly hurt Braxton? Holyfield vs Braxton 1 great great fight. But what happened a year latter when they met again? Braxton got flattened.
I was a Hearns fan. HATED Leonard for beating Hearns. But I could never deny Ray was a great boxer and he beat Hearns fair. I liked both Hill and Hearns. I cant deny Hill froze a little in his first big fight and it does impact his alltime standing. Sure he came back won a couple of titles but he fell short vs Hearns.
