Does anybody have ANY doubt that a prime Qawi would clean up 168-175 currently? Cuz I dont. I'm fans of Dawson, and Kessler... but Qawi would have raped both of them. I also think he mauls Hopkins and wins a decision over him. He beats the **** outta Glenn Johnson and stops him late. Theres nobody currently at super middle, or lightheavy that I can envision beating Qawi. It took a prime Spinks to beat him, and theres NO Spinks' around today. The ONLY fighter I'd favor over Qawi is a prime Roy. The current Roy would get killed.
Prime Roy is certainly not the only fighter I'd pick against Qawi. I'd pick Bob Foster over him via decision, and I think Archie Moore would've handled him too. Nowadays Qawi would clean house. He'd smash Dawson to bits, Woods, Cloud and Johnson too. If he were to make 168 without much problem (how much did he used to weigh in) he'd do fine there too. For a 5'6 guy he was an sbolute powerhouse, and his Frazier-esque bob and weave was very efficient indeed. How does everyone rate his power? At LHW I'd give him a 7 1/2, he seemed more of an accumulative puncher, who could change the pace of a fight with one shot but couldn't really knock you sparko with one shot. Also, the Saad fight; was Muhammad weight-drained, or was he at the end of his prime having been in so many wars. Qawi, then Braxton, was like 15-1-1 at the time; showed how he was was despite such little pro experience. Also, took some hellacious shots from Foreman before losing. How do you think Cruiserweight Qawi gets on with the likes of Prime Haye or Adamek Xplosive?
Underrated great, combination of James Toney and Joe Frazier, but he would have problems with Dawson and Hopkins, 50-50 fights there You have to have respect for a smaller man outslicking bigger men
Bro you misunderstood me. I said the only CURRENT fighter I'd favor over Qawi is Roy. But not the Roy of right now. The Roy of 9 years ago. Of course Foster, and Moore would beat Qawi. Hell... Foster might have stopped him.
I have no reason to believe he would have had problems with Dawson, who takes time off and was rocked by Glen Johnson. I think Qawi would stop him in a 12-rounder. I forget to mention Hopkins. I think Hopkins would win a very close decision, although Qawi had the workrate of Calzaghe with crisper power-punchers, though seemed less adaptable. There's certainly the chance that his constant swarming will wear the older LHW B-Hop down and either A) Bag rounds B) Get to Hop and hurt him.
Chad Dawson is one of my fav current fighters.. but Qawi would have destroyed him. Chad BARELY got past Johnson, and Glenn is a homeless man's Qawi.
Fair enough mate, sorry :good I don't think Foster would've stopped him to be honest. It's the safe bet but Qawi was very, very durable and Foster didn't knock everyone out at LHW.
And to answer your question... I'd pick Qawi to stop Adamek, and probably Haye. With Haye's explosive power though... I give him a real chance. But Qawi DEFINITELY beats Adamek, and beats him bad. Adamek is too slow, and too straight up to have dealt with Qawi.
If Foster caught Qawi with the type of hook that KO'd Dick Tiger, and Mike Quarry... Qawi would be out. NO lightheavyweight in history could handle that left hook.... NONE.
One thing's for sure, Adamek vs Qawi would be damn exciting. What are your views on the Saad-Qawi fight; do you think Saad was weight-drained, or had just suffered the effects of too many shoot-outs. On the contrary, do you think Qawi just offset Saad's rhythm and got to him like no one before? Saad looked like crap to me, but still a very good win for Braxton.
Maybe that was just a bad day at the office though, just because he struggled with Johnson doesnt mean he cant up his game, maybe he thought Johnson would be an easy day at the office and came in over confident
I think it was a combination of Saad being faded, and Qawi's style being too much for him. I'd pick Qawi over a prime Saad too... but by decision. The problem for Saad is Qawi's quickness would ALWAYS be a big problem for him.
Dawson is prone to taking time off in even his best performances. the best Chad would get smashed by Qawi. Styles make fights, and Qawi's style is all wrong for Chad. He would be getting his body smashed and as the fight went on and his stamina dwindled Qawi would finish him. Qawi was ruthless, Dawson has fought no one like him.
Yeah, Tarver wouldn't be able to get Qawi's respect at all, and would've been smashed to bits. The Glen Johnson that fought Jones was very reisilient though, and I think he vs Qawi would've been an entertaining match and a PTS win for Qawi over 12.
