[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SpyCVXIwYc[/ame] Says the weight issues are dangerous to bet on. Shame, I have Martinez on my list of 4 to win.
I've not got sound at work and I can't stand his voice, so I'm not going to watch the full vid. But I assume this is about Sergio weighing 176 pounds? Well we don't know unusual this is for him, unless we can compare this weight to his previous camps? Because his trainer has said: “The preparation has been going great, I feel it’s been the best training camp of his career and we’ll prove that come November 20th. With the preparation Sergio is having I don’t think Paul Williams will be able to keep up. He’s doing great physically and mentally he’s very motivated.” And Sergio himself stated: “Dropping weight has never been an issue for me. It hasn’t been hard. It’s more difficult to get in the ring and battle against Paul Williams or Kelly Pavlik. Cutting weight… that’s easy. My weight loss won’t slow me down. On the contrary, I gain speed. The speed will bring more of the element of surprise. With more surprise brings more potential and ability. I’ll be stronger than my last fight against Williams and Kelly Pavlik.” But considering the fact that Williams is making him shred those extra few pounds down to the catchweight, I can see why the above would be a concern. I really hope he turns up in prime condition.
Dwyer also points to the fact that Martinez is 35 so that may be an issue for him too. From that statement by Martinez, it doesn't seem like this happens all the time, but he's done it before and he's gotten away with it. Maybe not this time.
Well I hope that's not the case. This is the biggest fight of his career, so I find it strange that he would allow himself to balloon up to a weight that he wouldn't be at normally.
He told TSS that after training Wednesday morning, he weighed 169, and said he will have no problem hitting 158 on Nov. 19. http://www.thesweetscience.com/boxi...rsy-martinez-says-williams-all-about-excuses/
Oh, well there you go then: If he did indeed weigh 169 on yesterday, then these are encouraging signs.
Can someone explain to me how Martinez, who is a true junior middleweight, is having trouble making 158? I don't think it will be a problem
Dwyer overreacts it. I was a little shocked too learning about Martinez' weight, but not because he has to lose so much, but because what the hell Maravilla is doing at LHW 3 weeks into camp. But Martinez weighed 176 in full clothes after a meal, so he likely left the gym around 170. Since the fight is at 158 not the previously reported 157, and since there's about a month to go, 12 pounds doesn't seem anything special, Martinez had to deal with more than than not too long ago when he was a 154er. Still, if Maravilla is doing weight-training to sacrifice speed and stamina for power (he promised a KO), it increasaes Williams' chances, but it's rather a tactical mistake not a physical issue. Actually, Martinez doesn't need to do anything different, having a full camp this time around and Pierre Benoist sitting in a pub sounds about enough for a fair decision.
Martinez should still win this, but Dwyer is right. As a gambler, you should stay away from this, even if you don't think highly of Williams
I don't see Martinez being stupid enough to mess up the weight for the biggest fight of his career. He was probably fully clothed, and it's not a lot of weight to lose anyway. He came into the ring at 168 vs Pavlik.
What weight issues? Martinez is at what, 176? I'm sure he can work that off by the weigh in without much trouble. I'm more concerned that Williams is at 162 already.
It looks like both guys are underdogs on bodog for this fight? Is that very common. I have never seen that....
It's a pick 'em fight, much like Froch/Abraham. Martinez and Froch were on evens last I saw, the favourites are not that much better.
I reckon Martinez will win on decision. I expect the fight to be similar to the 1st, only Martinez will use Williams inability to fight tall to his advantage a lot more this time round. I was thinking of throwing some of my technical thoughts in as to why I think Martinez will win but I think for anyone who saw the 1st fight, it goes without saying. Martinez was drafted in on short notice last time round, this time he knows exactly what to expect and will make Williams look foolish at time. Martinez by close UD.
