Williams is a tailor-made fighter for Kirkland in terms of style. That doesn't mean he will defeat P-Will just because the latter is a better fighter by far. But stylewise he is an appropriate type of fighter for Mandingo to fight with. Spinks must overcome Latimore at first to speak more about it. Martinez will be a much tougher guy to overcome. Ditto Dzinziruk. Santos fight is a toss-up. So the only guy who will be an underdog against Kirkland is Vernon Forrest. he is too ewary and old...
I don't know who Dzinziruk is, but if he can throw straight punches, has at least above average speed, a decent defense and can take a punch, he has a chance to beat Kirkland. Kirkland is a relatively slow, heavyhanded, come straight in without moving your head, very tough fighter. He'll be hard for anyone, but if a fighter can manage to keep Kirkland at least a little tenative by throwing straight hard punches down the middle and then move, might be able to slow Kirkland's roll enough to land the body punches that will take Kirkland's heart and his power. Because Kirkland is seriously lacking in the skill and speed department. If you take away his heart and his wind, he has nothing left.
Close fight. Arguably less so on paper. Dzinziruk is at his physical/mental peak as a fighter. Kirkland is still stepping up in terms of comp and is just getting to 25. Dzinziruk has the height advantage but doesn't have the reach (like the advantage that provides Paul Williams for example) to fight from distance and stay out of harm's way. Both are southpaws which sort of cancels out any advantage there. Kirkland is much, much heavier handed than Konecny. Dzinziruk would have to maintain his composure and really stay active and careful at the same time. He would come under some severe pressure. Kirkland can be hit but does Dzinziruk have the power to change the fight's direction or would he be pushed backwards and be unable to land enough substantive punches? I think Kirkland could certainly whack out Dzinziruk. But, Dzinziruk has an advantage in being at his peak (and Kirkland isn't at his yet). Paul Williams would beat Dzinziruk.
It should be an interesting fight. I was impressed by Kirkland's work rate and pressure. However, it seems that his defense in not good. He gets hit too much. It will accumulate sooner or later. He could be successful for a while but his style will not allow him a long reign. I am not that sure about Dzinziruk. I have seen 3-4 fights of his. As far as I remember he had some problems with that Czeck guy who put him on pessure. If it goes the distance Dzinziruk should win it on points. The question is how he will handle the pressure.
Agreed. I rate them above Dzinziruk (if forced to select). Cory catches a lot of flack on ESB but he is a 1st class boxer.
Dzin-Santos - did you see the first six - Santos flurrying & slightly outworking; Sergei snapping his head back with jabs in last min of each round with more accurate clean shots. Or the last six - Santos comes on, Segei flattens him with right hook. Santos hurts Dzin end of rd 8 or 9, Sergey shakes up Santos numerous times - hands out a beating late on. Same with Julio - Dzin not great over first 6, totally dominant over final 6. Dzinziruk v Kirkland - Kirkland would have his moments but Sergey has vastly superior experience and boxing skills. I'm not sure Kirkland would do as well as Julio did. Kirkland will burn out in a year or two. Then he'll probably have to go abroad to fight guys like Dzinzriuk and get totally outboxed. Can Golden Boy develop a prospect/contender? They have done badly at 160 (Ikeke destroyed by Abraham), and 168 Andrade shut out by Kessler.
Dzinziruk. Unless Kirkland makes his shots a bit less predictable, and Sergei shockingly becomes a vulnerable fighter (he has seemed sturdy in ever fight of his I have seen) then he will school Kirkland. Mind you, I was impressed with the way he took the fight to Julio, who I fought would be too experienced (even at his young age) for Kirkland. Kirkland should batter Angulo first.
