It seems that after that surgeon like tko over the aussie fighter that gary shaw would have something decent lined up for the undefeated WBO champion. He was supposed to have lined up his 2 fighters according to an article right when he signed sergei in a clash for the full WBO title. I can appreciate him wanting to cash in on angulo, but an undercard fight against a no name in alcine is hardly worthy of passing on sergei. I'm quite sure that matching AA w/ sergei would be able to top a showtime card with a decent undercard. It would also pay at least as much and most likely more than what angulo will receive for fighting alcine, who hasn't been in the ring with a live body or at all since being iced by santos. After all sergei went thru in the court battles with universum to laying on the shelf for over as year and a half, it now looks as if he'll still be stagnant some more. While most on here probably don't give a **** about him, nobody can deny the ukrainian can fight and took a huge risk in ditching a powerful german promoter to sign with an american promoter to seek "bigger" fights. Shaw needs to step up to the plate and not let a good talent go to waste before that talent becomes to old to fight.
He's won over a lot of fans in his recent American TV exposure (and diehards were already high on him from before his layoff) - I would say those who are aware of him do give a **** how his career progresses. How do we know Shaw won't match him and Angulo next, after Alcine?
We don't. It could very well be. I think it would be fine and dandy to get Sergei in the ring with Collazo or maybe see if Saul Alvarez is ready to step up and fight for a title. I read that Sergei has a high purse minimum; whether or not that is true and what the amount is I have no idea.
Big ask just to expect the high profile fights to fall in his lap. Sergei himself said he knows he has to be patient and wait for those fights to materialize whilst he builds his profile in the States. The Angulo/Alcine fight was announced like the week of the Sergei's fight with Dawson..its a great opportunity for Alfredo to shine on T.V again. Shaw is a **** and I dont really like him but he has to look after the interests of Angulo aswell..IMO a fight like this makes perfect sense and may even get a bigger offer than a Dzinziruk fight if he looks good enough.
I'm going to laugh my ass off if handpicking Alcine blows up in the faces of Shaw and Angulo. Would it then be Dzinziruk-Alcine? That's not a high-purse fight, that's for sure.
There was apparently some medical issues with Alcine this week and the fight was at one point in jeopardy. Supposedly, Alcine has eye problems..but got clearance to fight, anyway.
In Canada it might go alright you know. Michel is doing alright for himself over there..Either outbidding guys in purse bids or raising enough money to stage the fight in Montreal without one. Nearly all his cards are televised on some French speaking channel and he has even got HBO and ESPN interested in a few of them. It might not be crazy to suggest it would be better $ for Sergei..but obviously doesnt bring the same kind of name recognition in the States that Angulo would, which in the long run is probably better for Sergei as thats what he came over for..to make in the U.S
I'm going to have to disagree with that statement my friend. I am an avid reader of boxing sites and the angulo/alcine fight was just annonced at the most a few weeks ago, while dzin last fought in early may. There was no fight signed until after dzin beat the aussie fighter.
http://fighthype.com/pages/content7648.html Press release dated a week after Serg fought Dawson. It probably sounded like I meant it was signed the week before his fight but I did remember it was after, just not long after thus why I said it was like the week of the fight because I thought it was announced at the start of the following week...I was a couple of days out. I dont think its stretch to assume negotiations were already well underway before Serg fought.
Shaw is a horrible promoter. He has the talent in his stable but doesnt know how to make them into stars. He relies on other having his fighters capitalize on other established fighters' popularity.
