He actually was offered a title shot after beating James "Hardrock" Green in Oct. 1982 but had to wait for it until Hagler had defended against Tony Sibson in February 1983. But instead of waiting or fighting a tune up against a tomato can, Fletcher's magager Marty Feldman had him defend the USBA title against the rugged perennial contender Scypion. Green had decisoned Sypion earlier in the year. Fletcher did not need to fight him to get a shot at Hagler. Scypion won and took Fletcher's place against Hagler. It's right up there with dumbest move by a boxing manager.

 

Fletcher at his best , would close the distance on Hargrove, not give him the leverage and range he required for his power punches, grind him down, stop him in about 7rds .
But until he stopped Hargrove, we'd be watching a potential fight of the year!!!

Never knew that part , thanks for the post always read it as Flecher Sypion was required as an eliminator for a title shot.

Always had an interest in The Animal as a kid they showed a fight of his on TV UK tape delay with his mother at ringside holding iirc a stuffed toy, which I remember amusing me.

Anyway he was always good to watch, win or lose.
