What is your early boxing memories .for me it would be watt v o Grady I remember watching with a mixture of horror and fascination as the blood poured down o Grady face from watts head butt both fighters and the ref were covered in it it pumped out with his heart beat .I think I was seven at the time. Hagler beating minter is another one perhaps it was the blood.I also remember Leonard green .the way green went down out cold before he hit the deck was shocking.at the time it was like ray had magic powers unbelievable.
The end of Ali; I am guessing the fight I have a vague memory of was Ali/SpinksII. The first big fight I do remember though was Minter/Hagler; because my little six year old self was there, ****ting himself...
Mid-50's with the welterweight/MW....weekly title eliminator / championship bouts on the Gillette & beer sponsored Friday Nights fights, plus Don Dunphy calling the "blow-by-blow" action.
Wow it was scary watching it on tv at that age all them p1$$ed up skinheads I wonder what would have happened if any of those prats had had tried to have a pop at marv god help um lol .everybody knew who hagler was at the time even my granny knew who he was she said he was a nasty bu55er .he looked and was mean .
The old man said it was obvious what was going to happen and we were out of there before it kicked off. Sadly Minter had a lot of National Front fans in them days, as well as a lot of personal demons (drink). But from what I understand now, he has found a new lady and is a lot happier in life. He was a real problem for his neighbours in the late 80s.
Earliest memory was the general buzz around Tyson when he was fighting every other month and climbing up the ranks on his way to meeting Trevor Berbick.
That would have been fun. In the UK we only got the Frazier fight, so coming into the Berbick fight, many of us were not quite aware of how good Tyson was.
Cheers didn't know that about minter.I know he is now friends with Hagler and visits him in Italy.he did own a pub when he packed in boxing I think he drank most of the booze himself.
I think my earliest memory is Ali beating Foreman. I was 6 at the time and I also remember watching Conteh, Stracey and the Finnegans fighting; Harry Carpenter providing the commentary.
In 3rd grade, hearing all the talk about Ali/Frazier 1. Started my interest in boxing right after. Started watching the replays of Ali comeback fights on Wide World of Sports. I think the first one I saw was Chuvalo/Ali 2.
It's interesting seeing the responses & getting an idea of different posters' ages. What happened well into adulthood for some are early memories for others. My earliest boxing memory is of the Ali-Lyle fight in May 1975 being shown on free prime-time TV. I was one month shy of turning 8. My dad was excited to watch "the fight" on free tv. Me, I was mad because it preempted Sanford & Son. One of my two local channels would run NBC on Friday nights, but for this event they ran the ABC boxing broadcast. For years I didn't even remember what fight it was. It wasn't until early 76 that I became conscious of who was actually boxing, with Ali's TV defenses against Coopman, Young, and Dunn. Years later I put the pieces together and realized the fight that interrupted my normal Friday night viewing and made me so angry as a little kid was Ali-Lyle, as it was the first heavyweight title fight on free TV for quite a few years AND it definitely took place on a Friday.
