Too soon? Rodriguez didn't want to be in that fight and didn't recover properly from the end of the second round.

And "American" stoppage? Dont embarrass yourself.

I've noticed there aren't a lot of KOs anymore. I'm talking about where a fighter either fails to beat the 10 count or is laid out flat.

Delvin didn't want to fight anymore. He looked scared from the door. It was only a matter of time before he hurt Rodriguez worse.

Even if you are right, he should have had the chance to try to fight through it

Refs today stop fights WAY too quickly, when guys are still on their feet. Fights need to go to their natural conclusion.

There doesn't always need to be a classic out-cold down-for-the-count knockout. People need to get over that.

An early stoppage is when a flash knockdown is scored and the recipient shoots up, clear-eyed and perfectly lucid, ready to continue but denied the opportunity by a crooked/bought or inept/overcautious ref. There are plenty of those.

Premature stoppages exist in boxing (as, conversely, do late ones)...

    ...COTTO TKO3 RODRIGUEZ NOT INCLUDED.

There is no real litmus test; you can't say with blanket generality "someone must go down and receive a count to warrant being stopped". That isn't always situationally appropriate. Sometimes a guy can survive literally a dozen knockdowns and still be game for more (see Matthysse vs. Corley). Sometimes, however, someone can still be standing up taking punishment and REQUIRE intervention for the sake of their health. So the mere fact of going through all the ritual ceremony of being dropped and having the ref impersonate the Count from Sesame St. needn't be viewed as the acceptability threshold for a stoppage. JUDGMENT, people.

Rodriguez was basically having a ***** Street Block Party from the end of the 2nd round. He was already obviously concussed on his stool. The way he reacted to Cotto's blitz once the bell started clearly marked him as lacking the faculties to defend himself and in need of saving by the responsible party in Frank Santore Jr. Rodriguez was actually given ample opportunity to fend off that attack, but instead was put on the ropes and ended up slumping into them, melting down onto the canvas under a hail of blows. Santore acted not a moment too soon and in fact, if he let Cotto land a few more accidental hooks on the head while Delvin was halfway down, kneeling or sitting on the canvas, it would have been TOO LATE, and perhaps with tragic consequences.

Learn what the **** you're talking about before discussing the prematurity of stoppages, people.

Yes there are. If you aren't seeing lots of them, you don't watch a lot of boxing.

...or, you're selectively ignoring all the real knockouts because you're harping on all the ref stoppages and pushing a whiny agenda hoping for the abolition of TKO's, period. "Natural conclusions" are quite often reached in the prize ring, but depending on the context, with the designated official in there exercising their judgment and being much closer to both combatants than we are, they don't always need to be reached and in fact in many cases shouldn't be.

Of course every judgment call isn't going to be unanimously agreed with. The ref's job is subjective, just like the judges'. If you don't think it's generally best to err on the side of protecting the boxers' health and well-being, however, when the competitiveness of a match has begun to be vastly outweighed by the one-sided nature of damage being dealt... (so I'm talking about Vitali vs. Briggs or Darchinyan vs. Burgos scenarios, obviously - not Calzaghe vs. Manfredo type bull****) then you are unworthy of being called a boxing fan.

rodriguez was still hurt from the shots he ate the previous round. u could see him trying to shake them off in his corner. cotto landed 3 very clean shots to drop him. no point in letting rodriguez take unnecessary punishment. good stoppage.
