There's a fellow up in the main who claims that we never had early stoppages back in the day, and that fights stopped while both men are still on their feet is a sign of the sissification of modern society. Is he right? Or have we always had early stoppages, where the ref decided to save a fighter from more damage and was perhaps a tad premature? I leave it to the classic section to prove the case either way. Would a fight like the Kovalev vs Pascal fight last night have been left to continue back in the forties and fifties? I'm aware of the Benny Paret vs Emile Griffith situation, but was that actually common practice?
he is probebly right, if it was an old school ref he would have let it go on, but if not wanting to see a man unnecessarily suffer serious injury or even die for entertainment is sissy then i am one. His general view is obviously true too, in 2000 years we have gone from feeding people to lions for fun to having debates about banning boxing. On that note, give those guys the choice between early stoppages or no more boxing, they would probably choose boxing. seen a few motorsport deaths live, just horrible and stays with you for a long time, probably will have those crashes in my head forever. The fact ive never seen a ring death live can only be a good thing. last nights fight was a perfect example of a good stoppage imo, as was the frampton fight, both of which some posters wanted to see continue.
Anybody who doesn't feel a sense of nostalgia for the old time fighters and rules doesn't have a heart, and anybody who wants them back doesn't have a brain.
That's ridiculous. There are literally thousands of examples of fights ending with both guys on their feet. To begin with, in the 1950s, see: * Sugar Ray Robinson-Jake LaMotta IV (known as the St. Valentine's Day Massacre ... or a sissy fight ... since both were on their feet) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2ZO9X7c98c * Ezzard Charles-Lee Oma https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf2XzmPtcMk * Jimmy Carter-Paddy DeMarco https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFcU6kjpEb8
I think we live and learn. The thing with Kov-Pascal fight that was off the screen shot of HBO was Pascal wobbling across the ring when Kov was getting brushed off for the slip so Pascal was still hurt from that corner flurry, then getting hit 2X times with clean shots and bending into the ropes I think the REF made a good call because Pascal could not be saved like he was earlier because Kov was right there. That being said there were many fight that should have been stopped -Perez-Mago in recent times but I think the last round Mago did a weird movement so not sure if it would have helped Baer,Carnara,SRR,Mancini,Charles,Griffith and others have killed people in the ring and I think its important that the referees can tell by other clues when a standing man is hurt.
