    Cause he's winning, and dominantly.

Right now, anyway. He's been beaten twice in his career by very good guys who aren't really world class already.

Ponce de Leon is a very good, very game puncher, and he ran him around the ring, landed on him very consistently, and did the better work for about six rounds. Broner got a bit lucky with that one.

And Quintero kicked the holy hell out of him. AWFUL decision.

Broner knows to stick to opponents with stationary styles. It allows him to ride his athletic talents and his natural rhythm. And his is a good fighter. But his limited defense, his astonishment when the ring is cut, and his inability to generate leverage going backwards makes him the most incomplete pound for pound fighter in recent memory. You've gotten do more than beat Gavin Rees to erase my memory that you are really on Ponce de Leon's level, which, while rather high, isn't pound for pound excellent.

I felt the same way about those fights.

Everyone going crazy over the Rees performance, who I've met and am a big fan of actually, made me borderline nauseous! Hardly Azumah Nelson-Pat Cowdell was it?!?!

Pat Cowdell vs Salvador Sanchez just might be my favorite fight ever in that weight class.

Nelson's uppercut ranks as one of the most stunning things I learned happened AFTER the fact in my time in boxing.

That was horrendous. Thats what cost him the Guerrero fight in my view. He needs to stick to what he does best.

Cowdell have Sal' some real hassle. As did Pat Ford. And Reuben Castillo. And Nelson of course. All very good fights that show Sal's ability to adapt to guys that he can't overwhelm with superior science.

Sanchez and Nelson might well be mine for 126. It has everything, as well as Nelson on pure fighting ability rather than the more cerebral operator he beckme. Watching Sanchez fend him off, get outpunched only to pull it out late, remains one of the most exhilarating fights I've watched. Brilliant, for every aspect of the game apart from educated negativity :D

Back to the thread (kinda') Canzoneri walloping 'Kid' Berg reminds me of a flipped Pacquiao-Hatton. I'm goin' on memory here watched the former many, many times but not in a while.

Watch it on YouTube (not long) and tell me if I'm right.

Should be on YouTube in full orriray, was when I watched it. Think Quintero came in at short notice but, alas, that's what top fighters are made of :yep :tong

He had NO clue what to do when Guerrero's left started landing over and over.

I was screaming at him "HAND UP!", and I was rooting for Robert.

Great fight, great crowd, really knowledgeable. Everybody next to me was calling Berto an idiot for how poor his technique was in those early rounds.

Goes to show, man. Berto had every advantage, but Guerrero is a damn good fighter, and when you make lazy or cocky mistakes against damn good fighters, you get hurt and beaten up.

I had Quintero winning 7 rounds clearly. It was that bad.

    Agreed.

I think that Andre Berto needs to go back to his old style and condition himself. He needs to have Joe Frazier like conditioning. He gassed out in the late rounds in the Ortiz fight and got whooped trying to use Mayweather's style. He wouldn't have let Guerrero close in on him so easily if he throwing large volume of shots as he usually does.

    ================

You also notice that Berto is so much more energetic and explosive in his old style, he basically was inactive in the Guerrero fight because he's trying to have that Mayweather mentality.

He also sells out to counter. He has a beautiful counter right hand, really, but he doesn't know how to "let it happen", as Eddie Futch would say; The key to good counterpunching is to fight a productive fight and let the other guy fall into your counters. Standing back, rooted comically to your right foot, right hand cocked? Yeah. Good luck. Guerrero stepped off to close the distance, and the whaled away. Really that basic.

Great fight to watch live, though. I had so much sweat and water from either guy on me, dry cleaning my shirt almost felt disrespectful.

Guerrero was stepping and leaning to the wrong side.

When Berto steadied him(And Robert started getting lazy and staying centered), it started landing consistently. Berto had several good rounds off the right-uppercut into right hook combination alone.

Ya'll will think I'm crazy...but I think Stanley Ketchel shows skill in his film against Billy Papke. It ain't pretty though...
Addendum: In fact, Magna, I'd like to know what you think of Ketchel in this film if you get a chance to watch it. Thx.

I'll give you round 7. I have a note right here on it that says "Reasonably close, Broner's best round since the first."

But, as you can see, he got worked.
