Dont get me wrong I am still not picking against Shaver or Williams..this is anyones fight....These were guys that were not really known for there wins and if we had to go by them I think Shavers win over Norton was a better win than Williams vs Terrell, still its anyones fight, not sure one I would BET

I dont know much about Williams. I'm wondering whether maybe he was a bit more of a "frontrunner" than Shavers. I know Shavers would get up off the deck and keep on swinging, even when he's all gassed out and stumbling around. How is Williams' track record in this regard ?

Williams had very good stamina. However I wouldn't say that he was very good at surviving if he got hurt.

Roy Williams had a sparring partner mentality. From what I know he simply let Dunn win without doing much. He did the same against Shavers for 8 rounds until his trainer lit a fire on him by saying that they desperately needed the money. It was only then that Williams opened up with any punches.

Then again so were George Foreman's. He also went 10 with former light heavy Gregorio Peralta. Doesn't mean he couldn't punch.

But Ellis was a ranked fighter himself, actually the number 3 ranked contender in the world. You can't discredit that win by saying he was suddenly old and shot against Shavers, especially because he seemed very lively battering Shavers around the ring until getting knocked out with one punch. Obviously not too many fighters are ever the same after suffering a first round KO but no one ever beat Ellis like Shavers did. He won his next fight, lost a close split decision to Boone Kirkman, drew with Larry Middleton, went the distance with Lyle and Bugner until having his career finished by Joe Frazier.

Williams had better energy than that of Ernesto Shavers........ Both had shaky chins....... Both had raw power............ It comes down to who strikes first blood...... However, if this fight / war would go over 4 rds, I'd favor Cleveland Williams all the way......

    Shavers is da man.
    clearly.
    much more impressing/telling wins.
did much better than williams against ali.
and unlike williams who had proven that if he lost a fight , he will lose the rematch as well and in the same humiliating fashion , i give shavers a big chance at avenging most of his losses , had he only got a rematch in each.
and of what i saw , shavers' chin was not as shaky as some claim , just not a great one .
quarry hit him and hit him , and shavers didn't go down easy. not that i consider quarry a great hitter.
also some of his stoppage losses were not a result of a shaky chin , but other reasons , maybe stamina , maybe accumulation of damage because of a not too good defense.

I'll give Shavers a GOOD chance in the early going; after round 5, its all Williams....

I think its fair to say that Cleve Williams was the early 60s version of the middle 70s Earnie Shavers.... Both had wicked power, yet both also lacked the special element to go up to the next level and excell....

    Not.
Shavers has 3 good KO wins over much better fighters than Williams : Young , Ellis and Norton. Some say he deserved the decision against Ali .
Also , he almost stopped Lyle as well , had that KD only happened 1 minute or more before it actually did , and Holmes did thumb him in his bull**** stoppage win to Holmes. He did deck Holmes the other time though.
The true failure is Cleveland Willams by far.

    Franky,

Ellis and Norton had so-so beards...... Nobody is overly shocked that a puncher like Shavers dented both of them chins.... Young was pretty tuff in his prime, but never known to be Superman in the chin dept., either....
