Earnie Shavers - ESB's Undisputed king of power.

I don't know, Louis had a lot of power and he didn't swing with full leverage like Shavers or Baer. How can we know that Louis has less power than the rest? Because he is a bit smaller than them? I don't buy that, Louis hit as hard as anyone.

Well, I don't know if he literally had as much power. Keep in mind that Foreman usually took care quickly of his opponents, which could be a factor.

I just want to say that the difference between Shavers and Foreman in terms of power is so small that it doesn't matter in actual boxing match. Foreman was far more dangerous puncher though, which matters a lot more.

JT - I hung a right just like you instructed - but there were a number of rooms coming off a half lit corridor, several lights ominously twitching on and off. Some serious whining could be heard from each and every room.

I only stopped to the read the sign on the first door - “Red Rooster Support Group.” Sounded like a lot of crazy sh*t being said in there, periodically followed by high pitched, maniacal laughing.

Curiosity got the better of me and I opened the door but there was just one guy rocking back and forth on a chair in the middle of the room, all on his lonesome, slightly frothing from the mouth. He slowly turned and looked at me - directly into my soul.

Yikes. I slammed the door back shut and scrammed.

Earnie was something else, but I'd run him over and can a man really be more powerful then you if you the one beating him? It's like, lineal with the success a man feels within, Power isn't straight forward with your punch- or even up and down like the 7 plates I benched RAW in my day. It's so many things and it builds like a muscle but inside your soul. like it also depends on what fruits you eat before the big fight too. I believe Caldwell also said that Shavers hit harder than Foreman and Lyle combined. Of course that was deliberate hyperbole to punctuate Shavers’ advantage but to be fair, as indicated by Caldwell himself, he really didn’t sample the best of Lyle - knowing Lyle to be faster, Caldwell said that he was more mindful to stay on the move and not get hit.

We discussed this before but one of the better ways to gage power without judgment being compromised by semi short circuiting of the brain after being hit on the more vulnerable points (viz jaw) is a fighter’s perception of power when he is hit in less “vital” areas - chest, shoulders, arms etc. - and to that end, many otherwise clear headed fighters attested to Shavers’ shots hurting badly wherever they landed.

Here’s a written IV with Earnie - it’s the only time I’ve read Shavers state people might be able to match their best shots with one of his own BUT every one of his punches had killer written on it.

Without a robbery, Shavers takes the title from Ali in '77. That's one of those gift decisions / robberies that makes me a little angry. Earnie deserved that win, and it would have been his crowning achievement. Of course, he'd only have held it until he fought Holmes, but he deserved it.

 

Does anyone know if footage of Shavers fights against Jimmy Young exist ? Always wanted to see these fights. Shavers getting a draw against crafty boxer, and KOing Jimmy Young which was rare. Would be intriguing to see.

 

He's an interesting guy. Fought, and lost to, so many great fighters.

Listening to his interview though, it makes sense. He was willing to fight anyone on a moment's notice for barely any money, and he looked impressive physically. Easy tomato can to select.

Seems like a good dude. Glad he's healthy.

 

Shavers was definitely not robbed against Ali. That is an absurd statement.

I don’t think he won the fight either, nor did the majority who watched it including Shavers himself.

 

Ali v Shavers is one of my favorite fights. Because just for a moment, you can glimpse the last bit of greatness of Muhammad Ali poured out in the 15th. He isn't perfect by any means, but I swear something just clicked that round, of course Dundee knew Ali was ahead, and he let Ali know, and of course Shavers had stamina issues and Ali knew he could steal the 15th. But watch the 15th round, his ability to pull back from punches just inches- centimeters consistently from his face returns, the power he's getting from his punches even moving backwards, he finds his range and he's hitting his target effortlessly. I love the 15th round obviously because, just one last time, you see The Greatest.
