Take out old man Archie Moore from Rocky's title resume, And insert big hitting but limited Earnie Shavers. 15 rounds for the last time for Marciano, against Shavers of the Ali fight?
This is one of those really interesting match-ups where you know logically that there's no reason to pick one of the guys but something in your guts just tells you that this can't be so obvious but then you think about it and feel your way through things, you know, the way you do when you're in your car and there's a woman with a very pronounced brow and she real tall and she wearin' those knee-high boots and all you can think about is it don't matter none what she used to be, what she is now, what she could be in the future. Skin wanna touch skin, man. That's just nature. And that's the way this fight would be.
Think it would take down Marcianos legacy a little as Shavers isn’t really in Archies league. But style wise would be an interesting fight. Marciano KO within 6.
It's a dangerous fight tho, isn't it, for Marciano.? When I think of Shavers, I always see him blasting Holmes to the canvas, and Larry actually being unconscious till his head hitting the ground brought him round again! I know what you mean by quality of the fighter, Moore is skill level miles above him, but Shavers has that A bomb punch to.
Shavers is dangerous for anyone I guess but I don’t think he did to well against pressure fighters. Lyle and Quarry come to mind. Marciano was just on another level. Think Marciano would have the most trouble w sneaky punchers like a Walcott or Tyson guys w power thag hit u w shots u don’t see.
Jesus, ferguson. You really believe that nonsense that Holmes was sprouting about hitting your head on the floor can wake you up if you’re unconscious? Good thing you ain’t a doctor
Good point s. If Shavers would have a chance, I always think it's going to be early, at least first 4-5 rounds. Marciano took a while normally to get going and if Moore could have him decked then Earnie in with a good chance for sure. But, I'll admit, there s a good chance that It actually Shavers that could end up hurt first.
Marciano probably still gets dropped, but stops Shavers no later than round 7. Probably much sooner than that. But Earnie showed incredible heart sometimes.
Shavers was flawed and didn't have a great gas tank. He wasn't a particularly physical fighter either. If he lands just right, things would get very interesting. I'm guessing he won't though, because at the top level he rarely did. The only realistic conclusion I can draw is Marciano wearing him down and stopping Shavers.
Yep, it's that thought of Marciano coming in forward, maybe not fully warmed up, and Shavers belting him with that right hand clean. Would be a real test for Marciano early imo.
