I think Deontay is superior skill wise, a better athlete with good speed and a serviceable jab.

I think Shavers skill set is much better.
He had decent skills, Wilder is largely unskilled.

Shavers was better technically, but Wilder has better reflexes.

    Boring points win either way!

Wilder's "skillset" is terrible. His athletic ability is notably better.

Both were the nigh to useless punchers of there day with mediocre resumes to match there skills.

Oh and before you say, yeah I think Wilders day is over unless he beats up CWs like a modern Foster and becomes an ATG at Cruiser or something.

Deontay Wilder was similar to Thomas Hearns as an amateur in that he didn't score a lot of knockouts in the unpaid ranks. Most of his bouts went the distance. And Wilder managed to win the National Golden Gloves, the United States Amateur Championships, the U.S. Olympic Trials and the Bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics primarily by winning decisions.

As a pro, he also won the WBC Heavyweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Bermane Stiverne after Wilder broke his right hand dropping Stiverne early in the fight.

The first time Wilder won most of the major championships in his career, Wilder tended to do it via decision.

Wilder has shown he is excellent at controlling distance in a fight. He doesn't take a lot of shots because he usually stays out of reach until he's ready to strike. When he does, he's is extremely fast at closing the distance, usually behind a jab-straight right that is difficult to avoid.

He's 1-0-1 in distance fights as a pro.

Shavers lost in the 1968 National Golden Gloves via decision. He won the 1969 National AAU Championship via a knockout. He went the distance 14 times as a pro, going 6-7-1, and losing decisions to guys like Bob Stallings and Walter Santemore. The best fighter he outpointed was probably Henry Clark, which is a good win.

Shavers wasn't particularly good at slipping or avoiding punches. Tended to hold his gloves over his face to block shots.

Both fighters tended to throw straight shots to hurt fighters, then looked a little crazed when they had them hurt.

But Wilder is a clear winner here.

It’s because wilder fights pure bums that are just there for a check and don’t want to get hit, it’s also not that hard to win amateur bouts when your lanky

Yes, it's not "that hard" to win the National Golden Gloves, the United States Amateur Championships, the U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials and a Bronze Medal in the Olympics ... or win the WBC Heavyweight title with a broken right hand ... or take on the biggest man to ever hold the "world" heavyweight title, and the #1 Pound for Pound Boxer today, and hold him to a draw ... you just have to be "lanky." (LOL)

    Try harder.

Shavers lost decisions to some pretty bad opponents. An absolute "prime" Earnie Shavers got outboxed over 10 and lost a decision to Bob Stallings.

    Wilder has the better skillset.

Wilder won the lottery with stiverne being the champ. Lol wilder got schooled by fury and that was the biggest gift draw I’ve ever seen. Also it’s not that hard to win amateur tournaments when your lanky, this is coming from someone who’s easily won amateur fights just from boiling down to weights where I have a huge height advantage.
