How many good punchers put and keep Louis down? He faced loads of powerful ones and nobody did that to him. I'd love to see how Earnie Shavers would do that without stamina or any secondary options other than slow overhand right. Louis faced better punchers than Shavers in his career.
Shavers problem is that he is good enough that Louis would see him as a threat, but probably not good enough to beat him. Louis probably decides that it is safer to take Shavers out early.
No he didn't Shavers was the biggest puncher of the 70s. There's a chance of Louis starting slow, Shavers starting fast and putting him down several times to stop him. And as you know Louis was kept down by Schmelling and Marciano. This content is protected
Shavers might be the biggest puncher of the 1970s (can't see him over Foreman in terms of effectiveness) but Louis fought Baer brothers along with many other powerful punchers. Louis started slow with tricky boxers, not with sluggers. He dominated sluggers. Louis was kept down by Schmeling and Marciano after long beatdown and it was in late rounds. Not to mention that Louis was in his last fight, completely past his prime against Marciano. Schmeling fought nothing alike Shavers, he was far better fighter with far better right hand.
Louis fought against Baer brothers, Nova, Galento, Schmeling, Uzcudun, Godoy, Simons and Walcott. You need far more than just a big punch to beat Louis. Shavers wasn't durable or skilled enough to make it work.
No of these guys was in the same league of shavers as puncher except maybe the wild unskilled max baer
Wild and unskilled is more or less exactly how I'd describe Shavers. I'd describe Max as durable though, can't say the same for Ernie.
Shavers was not the face of the Word skill however he was clearly more skilled than Baer who looked a jurassic boxer
Shavers was also wild and unskilled. Not to mention that most of them were far more durable than Shavers.
No way Louis beats Shavers. Earnie was a baaad mofo, was a lot thicker/broader than Louis. I think he could take Louis's punches well, too. If they fought back in the 30's with those really thin gloves, Louis might have a chance, but in any time period Shavers is bigger and could push Louis around too easily. I don't think Joe would be quick enough/light enough on his feet to stay away from Shavers, either.
Lmao Shavers didn't take Quarry's punches well. How's gonna take Louis'? Shavers coming at Louis is a death sentence, and this match up is with a mid/late 40s Louis, not prime Louis didn't plod, this is a myth. He set himself up, he was methodical. Watch him vs Baer, he got out of harm's way easily. Shavers hasn't got the chin, or skill to survive landing one on Louis. He goes sleep. Moral of this story: watch more of these guys.
