Moore only lost to the best at heavyweight (Marciano, Patterson and Ali and he was almost 50 when he lost to Ali). Shavers was not one of the heavyweight best, but he was the best when it came to punching power. Who takes this?
Moore’s far superior skill and ring savvy make him a heavy favorite here. But the prospect of Shavers hurting him with something big is always a threat.
Moore would have won in his prime. Eventually KOs him. If Moore could survive Satterfield and Sheppard I’m guessing he could survive Shavers.
Same way as always when Earnie goes up against the top dogs. They have to fight a near perfect fight. If they do, they win 100% of the time. If they screw up, Earnie might splatter them. Earnie is hard to favor, but hard to count out.
I know for a fact, Bob Stallings did not fight a perfect fight. He was a very flawed fighter with a losing record when he beat a prime Shavers. Quarry didn't fight a perfect fight either. He was actually getting hit a lot. I like Shavers as well, and think he's underrated, but it didn't take a top fighter with a perfect game plan to beat him. He had an excellent chin, and top-notch power but his stamina, fundamentals, and adaptability left A LOT to be desired to say the least.
The threat of what could happen with any lapses of concentration would keep Moore focused and sharp. Moore gives Shavers a lesson in counter punching. Wears him down with sharp accurate counters , KO's him with in 10 rds.
