Wilder and early. Shavers wasn’t skilled or quick enough to get on the inside and he had a weak chin. The fight starts off with Wilder already on the outside and all he has to do is land a few clean punches to take shavers out.
Wilder would knock him out, but Shavers can be tough to pick against. He was too powerful to completely count out.
Wilder has height/reach on Earnie and can deliver his big punches from distance. It likely makes all in the difference in this one. The real HW power of Shavers means he couldn't be ruled out completely though in the early going. 70/30 Wilder.
I think this fight favors Wilder. Too long and tall and Ernies chin wasn’t exactly the greatest. Wilder by early KO
As much as I can't stand Wilder he would win easily. Wilder's "title reign" may have been manufactured, but you'd never see him losing to Ron Sander, Bob Stallings, or Stan Johnson either. Hell, I'd even pick wilder against the fearsome Bernard Mercado. Shavers was a guy with a big punch and NOTHING else. No skills whatsoever...not even a good, solid chin.
This says it well. And Ted, thanks for completely sidetracking my morning with your super hot avatar lol.
Shavers skills maybe not GOAT level but he was able to went all distance vs Ali and for Ali this was not easy fight. If he wasn't some top5 material in this timeframe, Ali knocked him out.
I really liked Shavers fights. He either KO'd his opponent (often) or was KO'd himself. Going to the cards wasn't the outcome you saw or expected in nearly all of his fights. Besides me you're one of the few posters I've seen that mentions his loss to Ron Stander, who was essentially a skilled bouncer. Must be some big secret So no need to note The Acorns loss to CW (today) Quarry. There's just way to much glorification of the 70s HWs. It's partly due to keeping Ali as some messiah that he seems to be to more than a few here. Shavers was a huge puncher, maybe the biggest... in the 70s era. Highly likely Wilder KTFO of Earnie.
