hey here is a wicked much up

    both have a million knockouts
both were feared as vicious punchers

both have a few great-good wins
and many ko's over easier guys

    who wins?

    seems ray had more skills

maybe shavers had more 1 punch power,,,,maybe

    shavers got a title shot
    sadly ray did not

who do you pick and why?

also elmer has the coolest nickname

this seals the deal for me. ray had much better fundamentals from accounts. a newspaper report of his madison square garden debut (though i haven't read the original) gave him glowing reviews and the performance was felt to be enough to scare off joe louis. solid technical skill but just a shade lower power than shavers. ray had the skills to outpoint joe walcott, which gives him enough talent to outbox shavers if needed. he was vulnerable to knockouts admittedly but i don't know if shavers could set him up for the knockout without going through heavy fire himself

Ray UD Shavers, with two knockdowns

Can't tell without seeing Ray fight but he probably has the skills, chin/defense to take Shavers into deep water and outbox him or KO him. Those wins over Primed versions of Charles and Walcott past his own prime are mighty impressive ones, plus the fact everyone ran from Ray speaks volumes

If you believe the papers, Ray was suppose to be very fast. Read an article that described him as having "middleweight" speed.

I think that Ray was of a slightly higher calibre as others have suggested. I also think that he was a bit more durable. Even so, he could be taken out by a puncher like Turkey Tomphson, so we can't discount Shavers chances.

I think the fans win this one!

    Could go either way.

Ray was himself blown out by Turkey Thompson, who was himself a limited puncher.

Probably one of those fights that depends on who lands first.

This is an excellent matchup between two world class punchers who achieved similar status in their given day. For some reason I am inclined to picking Elmer Ray, but boy what a fight.....

yes it would be a great fighter,
just ray's greater skill seems to give him an edge

    but yeah what a war

Man people love seeing Shavers in fantasy matchups even though they're always the same ****.

"Shavers has a punchers chance against (insert name) but more often that not he loses"

At least this isn't another Shavers-Tyson though.

no this is different because both had similar reps in a way,

and ray was a great fighter

so no need to say atleast about him
